"I totally agree. Hiring an “independent contractor” sets up an already vulnerable older adult with potentially huge liability. My advice – stick with a reputable agency to provide home care. But even then, do your homework to ensure you’re getting the service you want to provide the quality of life your loved one deserves."

    Aging In Place

Many seniors and families choose to make modifications to the home environment so they can “age in place.” Talk about this option with others! is it more expensive than a home? less? is home care the solution for us. what do we need to do to start aging in place ?

"All Emergency Alert & Response Systems (EARS™) are NOT the same!"

"If you’re in the market for a Medical Alarm for an aging parent or loved one you need to know that all Emergency Response Co’s are not the same. Sure the slogan “Help I’ve fallen and I can’t get up!” applies to most, but that is where similarity ends."

"And with so many choices available… how do you make an informed decision? When shopping around the ’Net for an emergency response system aka PERS the first thing to look for is not always price. After all… is there a more cost effective home safety devise available for a frail or aging adult? What else is available providing help and notification in an emergency for a little less than a buck per day? As an alternative and solution to institutional living nothing beats this system."

"Price and terms are important, but the company you are dealing with is the most important part of this deal. You want a company that specializes in MEDICAL ALARMS and MEDICAL ALARMS ONLY. This service is way too important to be a side line."

"Next, check for unconditional guarantees and free trial periods — two great signs that the folks behind the company are serious about your happiness and total satisfaction."

"Make sure your EARS is set to “check-in” daily. In the event your EARS is accidentally disabled someone from the company needs to be watching and calling to help correct the situation. This costs the company money and time but is worth it. After all these systems are great! But only when functional."

"Last, I suggest you look for the most recent technology. Today newer system have added features like reminders for medications built right in as well as the usual, stand by batteries, voice boards and of course UL listings!"

"Now you want to check price. Good Luck! www.myears.com"

"My Mom has ischemic dementia and thus is very sporatic in nature. The Memory Support sites I have visited all appear to house clients that remain within a demented state. Mom is ambulatory, good natured and converses easily when she’s somewhat lucid. She needs cues for hygiene and dressing. Does anyone know of a site around the Philadelphia area that offers Memory Support services to someone such as my mother? I don’t think Assisted Living would work because when she is confused she will bolt."

    "Hi
This is the type of forum I have been searching for. For some reason, there is not enough help out there for the aging people in this world.Well, they are right. No one person’s problem is the same, but there are similar situations from others, if combined, that can help in some way. This is why I think an aging forum is needed.
With the population of older people growing everyday, this is going to become an epidemic for information of which there is very little.Aging issues is definitely a great forum suggestion.I would really love to see this forum, I get to the point of nuttiness at times looking for someone to talk to.Thank you for bringing this up!

"Keep a current medical record for your elderly parents. Summarize all past illnesses, surgeries, hospitalizations and tests. Note any current medical conditions, medications and prescribing physicians. Organize all health insurance cards, Medicare, Medigap, Medicaid and other insurance information. Keep this information on hand for doctor’s visits and emergency situations. And, create a medical history for yourself, as well.

"It’s a heartbreaking decision that nobody likes to make. Before you opt for institutionalized care from an assisted living facility, remember this: Medicare doesn’t pay for assisted living expenses. In many cases, having someone that’s available to help 24 hours a day, 7 days a week is all that’s needed to ensure life at home continues uninterrupted. EARS™ medical alarms do just that and for a price practically everybody can afford… as low as $29.95 per month. Plus, you have the option of renting or buying your medical alarm system. View complete pricing information for medical alarm systems now. www.myears.com"

    "Hi
Bored seniors and Boomers with nothing to do will like these creative games. People who had to entertain themselves with their own imagination when they were small should check out this funny stuff to do online. Here are ideas for things to do when bored at work or home. Some older people actually remember going to a library, pulling out a small drawer, and looking up Dewey Decimal numbers to find information. Well, the only thing that stays the same is change.

    My Life As A Caregiver

A forum for discussing strategies to handle some of the stress or guilt around eldercare, or any other issues and stories of Caregivers.

"I have an assignment and that is to develop coping skills in dealing with the changes in mom’s eating. As children we were taught by our mother that part of the nurturing process is to feed our children, make sure they are full and satisfied. As caregiver of my mother that same need is in me, to feed my mom till she is full and satisfied, that is showing love, as she showed it to me. However, as she has come to the final stages in her life, food is no longer needed or wanted by her body. So, as of recently, I have had to cut way back on the nourishment I used to give her. This has affected me strongly both psychologicaly and emotionally. But I am going to work on my assignments and find and develop those coping skills to handle this change in mom."
