"I am intersted in the rules regarding wheel chair restraints or wheel chair seatbelts. My mother has fallen out of her wheelchair three times, but the nursing home states that it is against regulations to restrain a resident to a wheel chair. Is that true."

"Yes, straps on wheelchairs are considered restraints per the federal and state rules nursing homes fall under. Talk with the Director of Nursing and Administrator and ask for a fall prevention plan that id’s ways the staff will intervene to help keep the resident from falling. There are some special lap cushions that can help in these cases that may not be classified as restraints."

"If the resident has a DNR order from his/her physician and has clearly made their wishes regarding use of extraordinary measures to prolong life, there may be no requirement for the nursing home to send the resident out. The state has a booklet “YOUR RIGHT TO KNOW” available on its website and it should also be available by asking the social worker at the nursing home"

"My mom was going through the same thing! I kept asking what could be done. Finally, I was made aware that a nurse from the main office was at the facility. I took my problem to her (after 3 emergency room visits and 6 staples in mom’s head) and she immediately got a lap belt and a “low” bed with a pad along the side in case she fell. we also put an alarm on her at night. She has not had a signifigant fall since. She has had a few when the CNA"s try to give mom her “privacy” while in the restroom. I have had to push to get them not to leave her unattended, because she will fall every time. Hope this is helpful. It changed out lives. I don’t know if the rules are the same in every state, though they should be with medicare."

"he Health Plan Options booklets are a good place to start to get an overall idea of what coverage might be available to you."

    • The “Guide to Purchasing Health Insurance” explains available health insurance plans, describes the differences between them, offers tips for shopping for coverage, and provides a checklist for comparing plans.
*The “Guide to Minnesota’s Public Health Care Programs” provides information about Medical Assistance, General Assistance Medical Care, and MinnesotaCare. It briefly discusses the requirements you must meet in order to qualify for each program. The Minnesota Department of Human Services oversees these programs. They handle the MinnesotaCare program and delegate handling of Medical Assistance and General Assistance to the counties.
*The “Guide to Additional Health Care Resources” lists programs or agencies that provide services in certain situations if you are unable to get coverage using the first two guides.
    • Use the “Glossary of Commonly Used Health Terms” to understand words you may not know.

"I live in Florida and am caring for my 85-year old mother who has mid-stage Alzheimers. I need to figure out what financial aid she my qualify for, i.e. Medicaid. She receives $1100 from Soc Sec and a small pension, has no assets and does not own a home. My Dad who is deceased was a veteran of WWII and the Korean War. I’m confused about whether my and my husband’s personal finances factor into her eligibility. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
