My mother-in-law was recently a temporary resident there. She was supposed to stay for up to two weeks while she did therapy after her knee surgery. We felt lucky that she was placed in a room by herself, but that ended up being the only good thing there. Though her specific diet plan had been given to the kitchen staff, they didn't pay attention to it. She was served food she was reactive to and thus she was unable to eat most of what was given to her. She didn't complain, so we were unaware of just how bad this was. She was treated poorly by an aid who insisted on getting her up after startling her out of a bad dream, though the aid was asked to give her a minute to calm down and catch her breath. Her first night, when repeated attempts to use her call button failed to rouse anyone to help her to the bathroom, and since she was on orders to not walk alone (a precautionary measure) she was forced to soil herself-a mortifying first in her life. No one checked on her until morning and by then she was understandably livid and humiliated. We were told the button had been stuck and that the red light to tell her it was indeed lit up outside her room was (and had been) broken, so there was no way for her to know that her requests weren't even being sent, let alone noticed. Needless to say, she checked herself out after only a few days, and we scrambled to try to give her care at home. With the weight loss, and dignity loss from those few days there, we feel better with her out of there. We recommend no one ever bring a loved one here, unless they get new management and staff.

This appears to be one of the worst facilities in Alabama. Staff is very uncommunicative with family of residents. Meals do not seem to be very nutritious, i.e. grilled cheese sandwich with tomato soup, cheeseburgers, etc. I feel that more nutritious meals should be provided. After reading other reviews, both by users and other ratings, I am really sorry my mother is there.

My mother was a resident of this place for a couple of years. The overall care she got was lousy. It was very hard to get a doctor to see her and most of the CNAs could care less about looking after a patients needs. The nursing staff was just to-do and there were too few of them. My mother died there and I wish now I had let her live at my house even though it would have been difficult and miles away from the hospital.

My mother was a patient at Whitesburg Gardens. She was able to regain her strength and walk again. They were very attentive to her needs and care. We would highly recommend Whitesburg Gardens for your friends or family if they need physical therapy or just to regain their strength. The quality of service meet and exceeded our expectations.

What is senior living? Both words in this phrase are essential, but the key is “Living!” Simply put, senior living is for those age 55 and older who still want to get everything they can out of life—with excellent value, excellent care, and excellent times. It means an engaged, satisfied lifestyle based upon your wants and needs. For some it means independent living, a way to live as usual but without the hassles of home ownership or maintenance. For others it means assisted living, a type of retirement community that still emphasizes your freedom and independence, but always with a ready, friendly staff to assist as needed. For those requiring more intensive help with physical needs or with Alzheimer’s or dementia, senior living means nursing care and memory care. Senior living offers comprehensive continuing care, where retirees can “age in place,” moving from one form of care to another as needed. Finally, senior living also means in-home care, where trained staff help retirees in their current home.
