About Aegis Living
In 1997, after years of working for what he perceived as gloomy and sorrow-filled assisted living communities, Dwayne Clark finally made his life-long dream of creating a brighter and more hopeful assisted living community a reality by creating Aegis Living. It continues to be his mission to bring joy and meaning to the lives of the elderly in the 28 Aegis Living communities located throughout the states of Washington, California, and Nevada.
Aegis Living is a private, family-owned company, helmed by CEO and founder Clark, with each assisted living community acting as a beacon of hope and a launch pad for innovative programs for thousands of seniors and their families. At Aegis Living, living is just like life should be: It's surprising, exciting, and remarkable, with a core belief that senior living is a new start full of its own joys and experiences.
Clark attributes Aegis Living's success to its unique culture and its ability to employ and retain the finest staff, which has helped the company become a leader in the senior living industry. With the lowest turnover employee rate in the industry at just 23 to 45 percent compared to the industry average of 120 percent, Aegis proves that their devoted employees are the cornerstone to the company, which translates into better and more consistent care for its residents. Another unique feature of Aegis Living is that Clark encourages all of his employees to submit their most wonderful or even impossible- sounding ideas for making life better in each community.
In Clark's book, My Mother, My Son, his passion to help the elderly and those with memory loss is revealed in a raw and compassionate way, as he chronicles the life of his mother and the uncertainty his family faced when she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and became a resident at one of his memory care communities.
In each of the Aegis Living communities, residents will find well-appointed apartments to make their own and a social dining room, along with beautiful gardens, easy to traverse walking paths, park benches, and sunny courtyards to stretch their legs, read a book, or pass the time. The common areas are the perfect place for residents to catch up with friends and neighbors over a cup of coffee. The dining room, lobby, and activities area are the favorite social areas of each community. Aegis Living also offers deluxe amenities, such as housekeeping services, transportation, and laundry, easing the stress of daily life and giving residents more time to enjoy their day and the activities Aegis offers. With each resident's needs in mind, Aegis' friendly staff is available 24 hours a day to make life more comfortable. With a concierge at the front desk waiting to assist with whatever is needed, Aegis' commitment to all it residents' well-being is unsurpassed.
Each Aegis Living community is unique and offers different amenities, but there are quite a few that are universally enjoyed by residents at each location, such as three delicious meals prepared by highly trained chefs in a formal or private dining room, transportation services with drivers that will help residents run errands, meet friends, and take them to doctor appointments. A computer and business center is also available for residents to use at their leisure. Aegis Living is a pet-friendly environment, with their communities being home to cats, dogs, birds, and fish. With a state-of-the-art movie theatre in every community, residents can relax into plush seating and share a movie and popcorn with friends. Also available are scheduled massages to soothe away the aches and pains of arthritis, fibromyalgia, and muscle strains by highly trained massage therapists who understand the benefits of massage therapy for seniors. With an onsite beauty salon and barber at each Aegis Living location, residents don't have to go far to look their best. The spa and fitness centers, along with a library, a card room, and activities room also helps residents stay active, allowing them to keep a sense of independence. Pleasantly landscaped gardens and courtyards, filled with beautiful flowers, bird feeders, and walking paths ideal for a leisurely stroll surround each community.
With a choice of lifestyle and differing levels of care, residents are sure to find a community that is specially tailored to them and their needs. Being a leader in assisted living and memory care, Aegis Living offers a continuation of care that allows their residents to age in one place as their needs change. Aegis' nurses and trained caregivers offer the best level of service, from managing medications, to assisting with a resident's daily activities, to customizing a senior care plan with a resident's medical doctor and monitoring any changes in their health. An innovator in cutting-edge programs, Aegis Living understands that social and mental health care are just as important as physical health. To maintain this standard of care, Aegis Living has partnered with experts in the field of eldercare, along with Bastyr University and the University of Washington School of Medicine to provide the best in cognitive stimulation, nutrition, and exercise for maintaining mobility and the necessary daily social interaction all seniors need for a continued vibrant life.
Aegis Living offers a variety of communities to meet various lifestyles. Whether a resident is an independent senior who wants to enjoy life surrounded by friends, or someone who needs more personal care and can no longer live on their own, Aegis Living offers Assisted Living, Memory Care, and Specialized Care.
"Life's Neighborhood" is a nationally recognized program developed by Aegis Living and is the core of their Memory Care program. The program's goal is to improve quality of life, increase enjoyment for people living with memory loss, and to decrease stress and anxiety by recreating the familiarity and comfort of the neighborhood of years gone by. Strong connections are formed between staff and residents, whether talking about past memories, looking at old photos, or simply taking a walk together. The "Life's Neighborhood" physical space resembles a large family home in the 1940s and 1950s, with the intent of encouraging residents to socialize in a nostalgic setting.
Special life skill stations are placed throughout each Memory Care community to create settings from the past that are unique to each resident to act as a mental nudge back to remembered skills and interests. Motion sensors and emergency call buttons increase the safety of the environment. Another unique feature is the memory boxes that are outside each resident's apartment, allowing them to share photos and mementos with their friends and care team. This allows friends and caretakers to have meaningful conversations about their present-day lives and the activities that are important to them.
"Life's Haven" is a room that provides comfort, calming, and redirection for those residents who feel agitated or restless by utilizing lighting, shapes, textures, aromas, music, and colors. Light Enhancement is also offered to diminish the cognitive decline for those with Alzheimer's and dementia, with proven scientific evidence that daily exposure to a specific light spectrum decreases agitation, symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder, and depression. Regular outdoor exposure is also part of this innovative program, utilizing clear umbrellas for less than sunny days so that residents can benefit from natural light and fresh air. Not forgetting about the importance of smell, Aegis' aromatherapy "Serene" is a scent designed to relax the body and calm the mind, while enhancing a sense of personal well-being.
At Aegis Living, short-term care, often called respite care, offers an opportunity for a loved one to experience an Aegis community on a temporary basis. The Vacation Coverage option can range from a few days to a few weeks, enabling family members of a loved one who needs care to take a long vacation or go on a business trip, while the loved one remains at an Aegis Living community. Another option is the Hospital Discharge, for those seniors who still need extra assistance while they heal. The majority of Aegis' current residents first tried the Trial Stay as a short-term guest to meet staff and other residents, experience first hand Aegis' activities, while test-driving the possibility of a new home. The Day Stay Program gives a senior the ability to spend the day at an Aegis Living community and enjoy all the activities and amenities offered while a loved one is at work.
When medicine can't provide a cure, the hospice concept of comfort and dignity is fully embraced by Aegis Living, ensuring that the patient receives the comfort, care, and assistance that can help maintain a better quality of life. Payment options for hospice care differ from Aegis Living's other programs, though Medicare and other insurances typically cover all hospice costs. All pricing options for each of Aegis Living's programs are discussed on a one-to-one basis with an Aegis Living representative.
