About Brandywine Senior Living
Founded in 1996 by Brenda J. Bacon, Daniel W. Lawson, and Peter J. Burke, Brandywine Senior Living, Inc. (formerly Brandywine Senior Care, Inc.) is a premier East coast-based provider that owns and operates 24 assisted living communities in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Connecticut. Brenda Bacon is the president and CEO of the private company, which is currently ranked 45th on the Assisted Living Federation of America's largest senior living providers list. Brandywine Senior Living also operates a small, short-term skilled nursing facility in one of their New Jersey communities (where and offers independent living services and memory care at most of their campuses.
Of note, the majority of Brandywine's management team -- many of whom are well-connected individuals with extensive industry experience -- have served in their positions for more than a decade, a testament to their prestigious reputation. Also affirming their success, under Bacon's superior leadership, the company has consistently exceeded industry averages for occupancy and in recent years, acquired and repositioned eight communities. In the future, Brandywine Senior Living hopes to remain a market leader that continues to grow and serve at an unmatched level of excellence in the industry.
To provide residents with the highest quality care in the setting appropriate to their needs is the mission of Brandywine Senior Living. Another component of their mission: to respect the individuality, independence and dignity of each resident, and to meet their needs in that context.
"Making Life Beautiful"
According to the experts at Health Care REIT, Brandywine senior living communities are high- end, luxury residences offering "unparalleled service and care to the senior community" and are situated in desirable markets throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. Each of their communities present a spectrum of care services tailored to meet the needs of their specific markets, and the company is dedicated to "Making Life Beautiful" for anyone who calls a Brandywine Senior Living community home.
Brandywine's care philosophy is demonstrated in their commitment to these core values: that every resident has the right of self-determination, and to be treated with dignity and respect; that the company aims to deliver the best service possible to those who trust them with the care of their loved ones; that honesty, thoughtfulness and integrity are just as important as the healthcare services delivered; that "great care is a team effort" and collaboration is welcomed accordingly; and that each Brandywine resident is an "active, joyful and fascinating" individual the Brandywine team can learn from and grow with.
Brandywine's Community Capacity
Brandywine's 23 communities have a resident capacity of 2,401. Of that total, the company maintains an independent living operational resident capacity of 65, an assisted living operational resident capacity of 2,336, and a memory care operational resident capacity of 610. The bulk of their properties -- 16 in all -- are in New Jersey. Of Brandywine's 2401 units, 71 percent are dedicated to assisted living care, 24 percent to memory care, 3 percent to post- acute/rehab care, and 2 percent to independent living.
Luxury Amenities at Brandywine
Though the majority of Brandywine communities are equipped for assisted living care, residents enjoy an "independent, carefree lifestyle" thanks to the availability of ample outdoor spaces suited for social gatherings or reflective, solitary moments, beautiful parlors for visiting and entertaining, and well-appointed suites that make everyone -- visitors and residents alike -- feel at home. Should they require assistance with daily tasks or specialized care for a health issue, residents can access Brandywine's continuum of care services, which includes licensed nurses on-site, not on-call, 24 hours a day and seven days a week.
Striking a balance between gourmet cuisine and great home cooking: that's the way they do things at Brandywine Senior Living. Delicious, nutritious meals and tantalizing desserts are served in an elegant environment and prepared as they would be at a fine restaurant by Brandywine's experienced chefs. Dining staff are highly trained to ensure excellence in service. At each meal, residents are offered a menu with a diverse array of delectable options. However, a listing of always available items -- called the All Day Dining menu -- ensures that residents have ample choices at every meal. Brandywine dining staff are also sensitive to the special dietary needs of some residents and are happy to accommodate these needs accordingly.
Brandywine's extensive wellness programs further demonstrate the company's commitment to superior service for seniors and their desire to provide a healthy, well-rounded retirement lifestyle. As health and wellness is a major component of such a lifestyle, Brandywine offers the security and benefit of a Wellness Director, who heads up a competent team of employees dedicated to meeting each resident's unique care needs. To that end, individual assessments, pain management, coordination of physician services (such as podiatry, hospice care, or rehabilitation services), and other related healthcare services are offered.
Many of Brandywine's assisted living communities are equipped with fitness gyms and pools; the Wellness staff also coordinate with the Arts & Entertainment staff in order to provide exercise classes and other wellness opportunities for residents.
Engagement and Enrichment Opportunities
Besides being comfortable and well-cared for, residents in assisted living should have fun too, and Brandywine Senior Living staff work hard to make it so. Through its unique program, Escapades... for Life!, residents are never at a loss for something new to do, something exciting to celebrate, or something interesting to learn -- with other residents, guests, staff, visitors, or independently.
A great mix of cultural, social, wellness, intergenerational, artistic, educational and just-plain-fun opportunities are offered at every Brandywine community. Examples include the following regular programs and events: Cooking with Class, Center Stage, Lifelong Learning!, You, Me & Wii, Karaoke Knights, Tailgaters, and many other creative choices. Every day, the schedule is packed with options -- from morning to evening -- that keep residents and their visitors as active and engaged as they'd like to be.
Brandywine residents, staff and families are also invited to participate in the Brandywine Cares program as a means for staying connected to the needs of, and active within, the community outside their Brandywine home. Each year, Brandywine Senior Living communities donate time and money to charities both local and national.
Brandywine's Lifestyle Living Options
Independent living, assisted living, and in one community, skilled nursing care: these are the levels of housing and services available at Brandywine's 24 upscale Mid-Atlantic communities.
Within each community, residents can customize their experience via these premier offerings: the Reflections program for specialized dementia care, which includes therapeutic programming in a well-designed, supportive environment; the Serenade program, which is a high-end concierge level of care that includes butler service and access to private dining rooms and lounges, the Passport program, which provides short-term stays & respite care for those outside of the community; the Reflections Serenade program, an "enhanced living experience" for those who require Alzheimer's care that includes access to a dedicated neurologist and a distinguished dining experience; and an exclusive Concierge Care package of services, room and board (only available at a Pennsylvania location) for those recovering from plastic surgery.
Awards and Distinctions
Beyond their award-winning "Reflections" memory care program, Brandywine received a 2007 Best of the Best "strategy in technical innovation" award from the Assisted Living Federation of America. The company's ALVIN (Assisted Living Virtual Information Network) all-inclusive monitoring program allowed for cross-departmental, cross-community, and cross-company data collecting and sharing that benefited all staff, from the COO to the nurse manager to the direct care staff.
Another distinctive Brandywine initiative is Brandywine University, an inventive approach to staff training and continuous professional development opportunities via two components: the Professional Series and Leadership Academy. From the basics of customer service to the complexities of dementia care to the ins and outs of human resources, Brandywine Senior Living's commitment to exceeding care and service expectations and a consistent alignment with their company values is again evident in this top-notch staff training program.
