About Brookdale Senior Living Communities
Founded in 1978 and headquartered in Brentwood, Tennessee, Brookdale Senior Living is the second largest independent living provider, second largest assisted living provider, fourth largest memory care provider, and largest overall senior living provider in the United States.
With 647 communities in 35 states -- including independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, and continuing care retirement communities -- Brookdale has a senior living community for everyone. You'll feel right at home at Brookdale, where resident satisfaction is the top priority of each and every one of its communities. In fact, Brookdale Senior Living maintains an overall resident satisfaction rating of over 90 percent.
As a resident of a Brookdale independent living community, you will enjoy a spacious apartment, elegant common areas, and a full suite of signature programs and services to ensure your satisfaction. Brookdale independent living enables you to take advantage of communal living and a vibrant social calendar without the hassles of maintaining a home.
For those who require assistance with activities of daily living, such as bathing, dressing, and medication management, Brookdale's assisted living communities offer an ideal solution in an apartment or homelike setting. Assisted living residents enjoy three meals a day; housekeeping, linen, and maintenance services; recreational and social activities; and scheduled transportation services. Trained caregivers are available around the clock to provide monitoring and assistance, and they also coordinate services with outside health care providers to ensure that residents receive the very best care.
If your loved ones are suffering from Alzheimer's disease or dementia, Brookdale's memory care communities can help them sustain feelings of belonging and purpose while preserving their sense of self. Brookdale Senior Living's nationally recognized Clare Bridge program offers a gentle daily structure consisting of at least six programs per day (mental, physical, and social) to help residents maintain their abilities and utilize their current skills. Residents enjoy a unique dining program, with appealing and easy-to-manage menu selections; individualized dining assistance; and small dining rooms with consistent seating to encourage familiarity and socialization. "We're Keeping Our Promise" personal notes are periodically sent to family members to communicate their loved ones' daily moments of success.
Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation
Brookdale's skilled nursing and rehabilitation communities offer short-term rehabilitation as well as long-term care in a comfortable and compassionate environment. Skilled nursing care at Brookdale Senior Living is available for a variety of circumstances, including stroke recovery, Parkinson's care, interim medical care following a hospital stay, and more. Care is customized for residents' individual preferences and needs, and is delivered around the clock by trained nursing professionals. Brookdale skilled nursing centers offer open visiting hours, barber/beauty salon services, and special therapeutic diets. Select skilled nursing centers participate in Medicare.
Continuing Care Retirement Communities
Brookdale Senior Living's continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs) enable residents to age in place, with no need to relocate when health issues arise. Independent living is the predominant lifestyle on Brookdale campuses, but all Brookdale CCRCs include assisted living and skilled nursing care so residents can transition from one level of care to the next within the same community. Some CCRCs offer memory care, and some offer home health care services. Prospective residents can choose from Brookdale's rental CCRCs, which operate on a monthly rental fee basis, or LifeCare by Brookdale CCRCs, which require an entry fee in return for guaranteed health care.
Residents of LifeCare communities enjoy the Care for Life Guarantee - once they are accepted, they are assured of care for life, even if they lose their assets through no fault of their own. Additional advantages of LifeCare include the opportunity to share in asset appreciation of your community on a favorable tax basis; a cap on future fee increases; predictable long-term expenses; and more. Numerous payment options are available, with residents free to select the plan that is most appropriate to their financial status.
Brookdale's hospice services offer end-of-life patients a full spectrum of care to provide comfort, freedom from pain, and as much independence as possible. Brookdale customizes the entire hospice care plan with patients and their families, with staff available around the clock to address urgent needs. Brookdale Senior Living offers hospice services through its wholly owned subsidiary, Innovative Senior Care (ISC). ISC hospice services are provided by doctors, nurses, hospice aides, social workers, spiritual counselors, therapists, and trained volunteers. The four levels of hospice care covered under Medicare, Medicaid, and many private insurance plans include routine home care, continuous care, general inpatient, and respite care. Bereavement services for family members continue for a year after the patient has passed.
Brookdale Senior Living also offers a variety of home care services for seniors. The Brookdale Home Health group provides Medicare-certified home health services with a doctor's order in either a private home or a resident's Brookdale apartment. Brookdale also offers Personalized Living (a.k.a. private-duty home care) for seniors who are aging in place or living in a senior community. Services include private-pay concierge services, supportive services, medication management, and nursing services, most of which are available seven days a week, can be arranged on a short- or long-term basis, and can begin within 24 hours.
Therapy by Brookdale
Therapy services at Brookdale Senior Living are based on the company's proprietary CARE 3 program, which encompasses rehabilitation care, fitness care, and education care. Rehabilitation care requires a doctor's order, with the goal of restoring or improving function through licensed physical, occupational, and speech therapy. Fitness care assists residents in maintaining overall health and fitness through Brookdale's signature Fitness B-Fit class as well as specialty wellness services such as massage therapy and yoga. Education care services consist of weekly health talks, support groups, health fairs, and the CARE 3 screening program to promote healthy aging.
Brookdale's Optimum Life
"Optimum Life" refers to Brookdale's philosophy of well-being, featuring a holistic approach to health, life, fulfillment, and aging. Optimum Life magazine is published free of charge for all senior living residents, associates, and friends of Brookdale Senior Living communities.
One of the company's signature programs, Brookdale Fitness B-Fit, incorporates components of Tai Chi with brain-challenging movements and meditative relaxation. Optimum Life Health Talks provide residents with opportunities to benefit from the expertise of Brookdale nurses and therapists relating to topics of interest in the health and wellness arena. Brookdale communities also offer "The Ageless Spirit," an award-winning class that enables residents to explore the role of spirituality in their lives. Through the Ageless Spirit Meditation CD, created by Brookdale experts, seniors can practice simple breathing and relaxation techniques that help reduce stress and improve overall well-being.
In 2013, Brookdale Senior Living celebrated the 10th anniversary of another award-winning signature resident program, Brookdale Celebrates. Each year, Brookdale introduces an annual theme that is then divided into monthly themes, with engaging programming and dining opportunities to engage the body, mind, and spirit. And, through a partnership with Wish of a Lifetime, the Brookdale Wishes program helps seniors' dreams come true - more than 270 lifelong wishes have been granted for Brookdale residents.
When you dine at Brookdale Senior Living, you'll taste the culinary creations of master chefs. Brookdale operates its own Culinary Arts Institute as a professional development program to enhance the skills of its chefs and dining staff. The professional chefs use low-sodium, heart- healthy cooking techniques, with only the freshest ingredients. Residents have plenty of menu options to choose from, including local favorites and seasonal specialties. Brookdale regularly solicits resident feedback in order to make improvements to its menu offerings. And if you have a favorite recipe, the chefs will prepare it for everyone, giving you special recognition on the menu for your contribution! Not only that, Brookdale has also developed a set of seasoning blends - Brookdale Signature Seasonings - to enable residents to control the level of flavor added to their food.
Brookdale was the first senior living company to offer residents and their families and friends access to ConnectedLiving, an award-winning social platform designed specifically for the senior living industry. Now, more than 100 Brookdale Senior Living communities have joined ConnectedLiving's secure social network. Not computer savvy? No problem. Access to the network comes with individualized computer skills training for seniors and ongoing support from ConnectedLiving's team of ambassadors, who lead group activities and classes.
Qualified seniors can take advantage of Brookdale's automatic debit payment plan, enabling them to pay their monthly apartment and service fees directly from their bank account. For seniors on a budget (or those who just want companionship), Brookdale Senior Living communities can match them with a roommate in one of its Shared Suites. Brookdale also offers a home sale program for seniors interested in using the equity in their home to move to a LifeCare community.
Brookdale Senior Living also offers a variety of third-party options to provide financial flexibility, including a line of credit from ElderLife Financial Services and an assurance benefit and life settlement from Life Care Funding Group. In addition, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers the Aid and Attendance Pension ($1,000 to $2,000 per month) to eligible wartime veterans and their surviving spouses, which can offset a significant portion of the long- term care expenses in a Brookdale community. Brookdale is committed to working closely with local VA representatives to help prospective residents receive these benefits.
Year after year, Brookdale Senior Living has been honored with national recognition from the Assisted Living Federation of America (ALFA). In 2013, Brookdale won two ALFA Best of the Best Awards - one for innovative lead management initiatives, and the other for Hospitality IQ, Brookdale's mobile app that gives staff members access to the best strategies for solving problems they encounter in the field. Brookdale was also honored by ALFA through two Programs to Spotlight - one for its Signature Sauces, enabling residents to change any dish by swapping out the sauce; and one for "The Ageless Spirit," a year of programming as part of Brookdale's Optimum Life wellness program.
In 2012, Brookdale Senior Living earned an ALFA Best of the Best Award for "Menu Manager 8.0," a pre-planned 13-week menu cycle for Brookdale communities that includes customization for seasons, regions, and FDA nutritional requirements. Also in 2012, Brookdale won a SeniorHomes.com Best of the Web award for "Best Designed Senior Living Provider Website."
