About Genesis HealthCare
One of the nation's largest providers of skilled nursing, short-term rehabilitation therapy and long-term care, Genesis HealthCare operates more than 400 skilled nursing centers and assisted living communities in 28 states across the nation. In addition, the organization's Genesis Rehab Services division provides therapy to more than 1,500 healthcare providers in 45 states and the District of Columbia.
Headquartered in downtown Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, a historic hamlet located southwest of Philadelphia and northwest of Wilmington, Delaware, Genesis HealthCare has a long history of providing quality care to senior adults and their families. Through acquisitions of other nursing facilities and related organizations, Genesis HealthCare has built a unified company offering all the varied services individuals may need as they age.
Genesis HealthCare was founded in 1985 as Genesis Health Ventures when George R. Walker acquired nine skilled nursing facilities for $32 million. By 1998, the company had become a 2.4 billion dollar public company through the acquisition of other facilities offering healthcare services including a pharmacy, rehabilitation therapy, diagnostic testing, and respiratory therapy. In 2003, leaders divided the company's pharmacy division and in-patient care divisions into two separate companies. Its skilled nursing centers, assisted living and independent living communities, and rehabilitation therapy services joined together as a new entity, Genesis HealthCare Corporation. In July 2007, Formation Capital and JER Partners acquired Genesis HealthCare Corporation, making it a privately held company again.
In 2012, Genesis HealthCare acquired Sun Healthcare Group for almost $300 million. That transaction took the company from the 36th largest senior living provider to the 24th largest. The acquisition of Sun Healthcare Group also helped Genesis HealthCare increase the number of residents who live in its properties by 57 percent, an increase of 1,620 residents, for a total capacity of 4,478 residents.
For each of those residents, Genesis HealthCare is dedicated to delivering high-quality, personalized health care that meets each individual's needs. The company employs almost 80,000 professionals to help meet the health care needs of each resident.
Senior Living Options
Genesis HealthCare offers a number of levels of care, ranging from short-term rehabilitation stays to permanent living options. The company's professional staff is available to help potential residents and their family members determine the best option for each individual.
According to Genesis HealthCare CEO George Hager, Jr., the most important trend that is shaping senior living today is "our ability to respond to the growing number of older adults who require short-term rehabilitation therapy before returning home." At Genesis, executives believe that a key component of this therapy is the existence of "specialty programs like cardiac management and pulmonary care and strong education programs so that older adults can have more control and take an active role in their own disease management," Hager says.
Genesis offers numerous care options that combine rehabilitation therapy and skilled nursing care. Rehabilitation therapy is at the core of each option. That includes occupational, physical and speech therapy to meet the needs of patients who are dealing with the effects of illness, disease, disability, injury, surgery or the aging process. Each patient's rehabilitation therapy regimen is determined based on his or her individual diagnosis.
Many Genesis facilities also offer RevitalCare, a proprietary program designed to provide new treatment options for pain, arthritis, stroke, slow healing wounds, shingles, neuromuscular diseases and fall prevention. This program utilizes medical devices that use gentle electrical pulses, sound waves, infrared light and other technologies to speed recovery following an injury. These devices relieve pain and swelling, while increasing circulation and strength.
Long Term Care
Patients who come to Genesis in need of long-term care find that the facilities offer 24-hour medical and support services. These services are designed specifically for elderly residents and people with a chronic condition or a prolonged illness. The focus is on providing a comforting environment, a high quality of life, and an appropriate level of independence for each patient.
Active seniors who want to live in community with others and have a little help in meeting day- to-day needs are ideal residents for Genesis HealthCare's Assisted/Senior Living facilities. These facilities offer daily activities such as shopping trips, movies and other outings, allowing seniors to build friendships and stay active, without worrying about the daily efforts required for preparing meals or maintaining a home.
These communities focus on supporting seniors' independence, while offering the security of 24- hour staff, and personalized care services in case they are needed. Apartments at assisted/senior living facilities are available with or without furnishings, so residents can choose whether to bring their own furniture or simply bring themselves and a few personal items.
For older adults who need assistance but aren't quite ready to leave their own homes, Genesis offers Genesis SelectCare, a licensed Private Duty Home Care Agency operating under the Office of Health Care Quality in Maryland. Through this service, professional care providers assist individuals in safely maintaining their independence at their own homes by offering companionship and supporting daily needs and activities.
Unlike a home health agency, which provides care only in response to doctor's orders and only for a period of 60 days, Genesis SelectCare is a private duty home care agency, so it delivers services for as long as the consumer wishes. Provided services include sitter/companion care, live-in care, transportation, bathing services, respite care for one-day or a weekend, and specialized services including Alzheimer's or dementia care, transitional care and palliative care. SelectCare professionals are also available for special events, which include transportation and one-on-one assistance at a special event such as a wedding or holiday.
All SelectCare services are provided by Certified Nursing Assistants or Geriatric Nursing Assistants under the supervision of Registered Nurses. All members of the SelectCare team are certified in CPR and have at least 100 hours of nursing training.
