Holiday Retirement -- and the concept of independent senior living -- was founded in
Vancouver, Washington, in 1971 by William E. Colson and his father, Hugh Colson. The goal:
to create an independent living environment unlike anything seniors had seen before.
Today, Holiday Retirement is the third largest senior living provider in the United States, and the largest independent living provider in North America. Through more than 300 independent living retirement communities across 43 United States and seven Canadian provinces, more than 30,000 seniors benefit from the security, comfort, and value offered by Holiday Retirement - what is affectionately known as "The Holiday Touch." Since 2007, Holiday Retirement has been privately held by Fortress Investment Group LLC, a leading diversified global investment management firm.
Before William Colson became known as the "Father of Independent Retirement Living," he was operating Colson & Colson construction with his own father, Hugh Colson. Father and son specialized in building nursing homes, but soon realized that seniors needed more than quality care -- they had social, physical, educational, and spiritual needs to be addressed, too. The Colson men opened their first independent retirement community to be a nurturing environment that would meet the full spectrum of seniors' needs. William Colson passed away in 2007, but his legacy lives on in the thousands of Holiday Retirement residents who are living the life they've always wanted.
In 2012, Holiday Retirement moved its headquarters from Salem to Lake Oswego, Oregon, to support its growing infrastructure needs in view of the company's continued expansion across North America.
At Holiday Retirement, seniors have their own private suites, with multiple floor plans and options to choose from. Residents are free to bring their own furnishings and décor to turn their apartment into a place they can truly call home. Each studio, one-, and two-bedroom suite features individually controlled heating and air conditioning; a kitchenette with sink, cupboards, and refrigerator with freezer; and an emergency call system that is monitored around the clock by Holiday Retirement's live-in managers. Virtually all major utilities (except phone) are included in the monthly rent, including cable TV, heat, and air conditioning. And you don't have to leave Fido or Fluffy at home -- cats and dogs are welcome at no additional fee. A guest apartment is available at most communities with minimal cost.
In addition, more than 70 Holiday Retirement communities offer cottages, which boast the benefits of a stand-alone home with all the perks of community living. Each cottage features a full kitchen with most major appliances, a private yard or patio, and more, while still affording access to all the on-site amenities and services offered by the community.
Services and Amenities
Weekly housekeeping and linen service is included for all Holiday Retirement residents, and washers and dryers are conveniently located throughout each community, free of charge. Residents also benefit from complimentary shuttle service for appointments, errands, and off-site activities. For residents and guests with cars, parking is free. Residents can take advantage of an on-site barber/beauty salon, resident kitchen, and chapel. It's also worth noting that every Holiday Retirement community features easy-to-maneuver floor plans with wide hallways, handrails, and strategically placed furniture to make life simpler and more comfortable for residents.
Holiday Retirement communities do not provide health care, but home care is available for seniors who require assistance with needs such as bathing, dressing, housekeeping, meals, and medication. Services are offered by outside health care providers. If you don't have an existing provider, Holiday Retirement can recommend home health care providers that already work within its communities. Home health care provider costs are not covered by rent at Holiday Retirement.
Live-in Community Managers
A distinguishing feature of Holiday Retirement is its live-in community managers. These team members are also residents of the community, making them available to seniors any time of day or night. Live-in managers facilitate seniors' smooth transition to the community. They participate in activities, dine with seniors, and work tirelessly to make all residents feel welcome. By residing in the community, live-in managers are truly able to get to know residents, look out for their best interests, and provide excellent support to them and to their families. These devoted staff members see their role as more of a calling than a job, helping to create the family-like atmosphere that Holiday Retirement communities are known for.
Home-cooked meals are a hallmark of dining at Holiday Retirement. The menus are robust and varied, featuring only the freshest, highest quality, most nutritious ingredients, with many regional favorites. Everything is made fresh from scratch by professionally trained chefs -- no pre-mixed or pre-prepared foods here! Some of Holiday's executive chefs have cooked for presidents and world leaders, others have worked at five-star restaurants, and all are committed to preparing three exceptional meals each day for their community. Of course, options are available for residents who prefer something other than what is being served.
Meals are served in the community's restaurant-style dining room by wait staff who know each resident's name and dining preference. Residents who would like to host a private gathering for family or friends are welcome to reserve the private dining room for their event. All new residents can look forward to being greeted with a housewarming party in the community's private dining room.
Activities at Holiday Retirement extend beyond just games and puzzles. Each community offers a full calendar of activities and events that benefit residents in every aspect of life: physical, emotional, spiritual, intellectual, creative, social, and vocational. This holistic approach to wellness enriches the lives of residents and enables them to expand their horizons. Holiday Retirement communities offer activities such as Tai Chi, Bean Bag Baseball, and even Nintendo Wii sports. The Wii system is featured in every Holiday Retirement community; some communities have even formed Wii leagues! Plus, all residents have access to exercise equipment or a fitness room, and each community features a billiards lounge and game room as well as a TV and media room for fun and relaxation.
Seniors Serving Seniors and Seniors Serving Society
Holiday Retirement developed the award-winning volunteer program Seniors Serving Seniors and Seniors Serving Society (SSS) to coordinate opportunities for residents to enrich the lives of others, and enhance purpose and passion in their own lives as well. Through SSS, Holiday seniors have had the opportunity to work with the American Red Cross; Habitat for Humanity; local food banks, schools, senior centers, police officers and firefighters, veterans; and others. Holiday Retirement seniors were also able to assist in relief efforts for disasters such as Hurricane Katrina and the earthquake in Haiti.
Commitment to Veterans
Home to more than 12,000 veterans and surviving spouses, Holiday is dedicated to celebrating veterans and supporting important veteran-related causes. Many Holiday communities feature a Wall of Honor to show appreciation for the sacrifices that resident men and women have made for their country. Not only that, but Holiday Retirement is also a National Founding Partner in the Veteran's History Project, which collects veterans' personal accounts of war to be preserved in the Library of Congress in order to convey the realities of war to future generations. Holiday Retirement is one of the only original senior living providers involved with the project.
Holiday Retirement is truly an industry leader in serving veterans. Among its most notable philanthropic endeavors is its $1.2 million donation -- following a three-month fundraising effort at every Holiday community -- to the Outward Bound for Veterans program in 2011. The donation paid for 600 veterans to participate in an Outward Bound journey, which is a challenging wilderness learning expedition focused on character development, leadership, and service for veterans struggling to readjust to civilian life.
Exclusive Travel Program
Seniors who love to travel will always have a place to stay in a Holiday Retirement community. Holiday's one-of-a-kind travel program allows residents to visit another Holiday community -- there are more than 300 to choose from -- at no additional expense. Holiday travelers can stay in a comfortable guest suite, enjoy all meals, utilize the shuttle service, and participate in all community programs and activities for up to seven nights per visit.
Before you make your senior living decision, Holiday Retirement invites you for a trial stay at one of its communities. A trial stay offers the opportunity to experience independent living at a Holiday community firsthand -- at no cost to you. With more than 40 years of experience providing unrivaled service, compassion, and care, Holiday Retirement is confident that its communities are a place you can call home.
One of the most revolutionary aspects of Holiday Retirement is its one, all-inclusive monthly rent. Market rents vary by location and suite size, but there are no buy-in fees, no hidden costs, and no long-term leases or commitments. Agreements are all made on a month-to-month basis. In short, there are no surprises when it comes to financing with Holiday Retirement. You can write just one check per month and have the daily details of life taken care of.
Since health care is not provided, Medicare and Medicaid are not accepted at Holiday Retirement. The majority of residents use private funds to pay their monthly rent, though eligible veterans and surviving spouses may qualify for Aid and Attendance pension benefits.
Holiday Retirement is proud to partner with the National Active & Retired Federal Employees Association (NARFE) to offer exclusive discounts to members and their immediate families. NARFE members are entitled to one month of free rent at any Holiday community or an equivalent of moving expenses, as well as a waiver of any upfront community fees. Holiday Retirement also offers an exclusive discount to members of the American Military Retirees Association, who may be eligible to receive $900 off the first month's rent.
In addition, Holiday Retirement has partnered with PerkSpot, a leading provider of online voluntary benefits and employee perks programs, to offer members and their immediate families one month of free rent and a waiver of upfront community fees at any Holiday community.
Holiday Retirement has received the International Council on Active Aging's "Most Innovative Program" award on two separate occasions. One was for its fitness challenge, which entailed a companywide fitness challenge at every Holiday community, and the other was for its renowned Seniors Serving Seniors and Seniors Serving Society program.
