About Senior Lifestyle Corp.
With retirement communities in 20 states, Senior Lifestyle Corp. (SLC) is among the top 10 senior living providers in the United States. Serving the needs of 12,000+ residents in more than 85 communities, this Chicago-based privately held company was founded in 1985 to meet the growing demand among seniors for quality living options. SLC's first community, The Breakers at Edgewater Beach in Chicago, opened in 1988 as a paragon of upscale, independent apartment living with a spectacular lakefront view. The following year, SLC turned to Chicago's northern suburbs to open a second upscale community, The Breakers of Golf Mill. In the early 1990s, SLC worked in cooperation with the City of Chicago to begin developing affordable apartment living communities known as Senior Suites, which now encompass more than 20 locations throughout Chicago and nearby areas.
Moving beyond the Chicago market, SLC positioned itself for growth in the mid-1990s by expanding its investor base and making key acquisitions. Over the next decade, SLC acquired several Continuing Care Retirement Communities in such states as Ohio, Illinois, and Colorado while continuing to develop its own properties, including the luxury apartment community of Mangrove Bay in Jupiter, Fla.
The development of several midmarket communities over the past eight years has positioned SLC as one of the few providers to serve seniors at all economic levels. Continuing acquisitions and management contracts have expanded SLC's presence to such states as Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Alabama, North and South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Oklahoma, Arizona, New Mexico, Georgia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and Virginia.
Senior Lifestyle Corp. has built a reputation for offering innovative programs that help residents lead healthier, more active, and more fulfilling lives. One of SLC's most highly acclaimed programs is Wellness Everyday(tm), which offers seniors daily classes and activities that focus on six dimensions of wellness as defined by the World Health Organization -- physical, intellectual, emotional, spiritual, social, and vocational. This program received a 2003 ICAA Innovators Award from the International Council on Active Aging(r) (ICAA).
Another highly successful program is Dining for Wellness(tm), which proves the premise that healthy eating and delicious cuisine can definitely go hand in hand. The program features six special menus with food items that have been shown to have a positive impact on such medial conditions as hypertension, high blood pressure, memory loss, arthritis, and diabetes. SLC also schedules corresponding informational lectures that reinforce the importance of diet in reducing the adverse effects of these conditions.
Brain Health University
One of SLC's newest programs is Brain Health University, which encourages seniors to participate in unique and challenging cognitive activities that engage the brain. Launched in 2011, BHU offers a curriculum of 30 courses in such categories as physical fitness, nutrition, stress management, cognitive stimulation, and social interaction. Residents who take 18 courses within a 60-day period receive certificates of completion presented during a special graduation ceremony. With its focus on motivating seniors to pursue a brain-healthy lifestyle, BHU has won immediate acclaim with a 2011 ICAA Innovators Award and with an ALFA 2012 Best of the Best Award from the Assisted Living Federation of America.
Institute of Hospitality
Senior Lifestyle Corp. employees are dedicated to providing the highest level of care and service to its residents. In keeping with this dedication, SLC offers promising employees the opportunity to participate in an advanced educational experience known as the Institute of Hospitality. There are three schools that are part of the Institute of Hospitality: the School of Management, the School of Innovative Programming, and the School of Culinary Arts. Only a limited number of applicants are chosen annually to participate in these learning opportunities, with candidates selected based on rigorous requirements that assess their talents, goals, and commitment to excel. Those who successfully complete the program have an excellent track record for moving on to higher achievement and effective leadership roles within the SLC organization.
The School of Culinary Arts
As proof of its commitment to fine dining, Senior Lifestyle Corp. introduced the School of Culinary Arts as part of the Institute of Hospitality. This is the only school of its kind in the senior living industry, and it allows participants the unique opportunity to work with some of the finest chefs and restaurateurs in the country. Upon completion of the program, SLC employees emerge as talented chefs themselves with the ability to create fresh, healthy, low-sodium cuisine that is pleasing to the palette and well suited to the dietary needs of senior residents.
Senior Living Options
Senior Lifestyle Corp. offers a full range of senior living options encompassing everything from independent living to assisted-living to continuing care. In the case of independent living, SLC strives to meet the growing expectations of today's active seniors by providing a hospitality-centered community atmosphere in a residential setting. SLC independent living options allow residents to choose from a variety of apartment layouts, which they can decorate in their own unique tastes.
In independent living communities, residents have access to a variety of social opportunities such as book discussion groups, walking groups, bridge lessons, and Wii bowling, just to name a few. Residents can choose to cook in their own kitchens or join others in the dining room for a wonderfully prepared meal. Throughout the day, they have access to beautifully appointed grounds that please the eye and uplift the spirit.
SLC also offers assisted-living communities that offer a full range of care levels to meet the needs of residents as well as options for memory care, rehabilitation or respite care, and skilled nursing.
