Recently, I spent two and a half weeks at the Country Villa Laguna Hills Healthcare Center (December 3-21, 2011). First of all, there were about six people who performed professionally and diligently.
I wish I could say the same for the rest of the staff. I quickly learned that if I rang the buzzer at night, there would be a 15 to 30-minute wait, even though my room was directly across from the nurses’ station. For a 208 bed facility, they appear to be significantly understaffed and/or deficient in quality care.
The rudest and most intrusive person was the nurse practitioner. Not only did she not listen, but she was busy talking and telling everyone how overburdened she was (i.e., on Sunday she had over 100 patients to see). One of the persons gave me the wrong meds twice. Fortunately, I always asked what each pill was for (and, no thank you, I don’t need a stool softener when I’ve had diarrhea for six weeks from the antibiotics
The Physical Therapy/OT program was good. However, the physical therapy scheduling coordinated poorly with my IV schedule. They came in every day at the same time to get me for PT and would have to return later due to my IV. This could have been corrected so easily; but was not.
As a diabetic, I was disappointed to see that I was given a “regular” menu. The food was less than desirable. (I averaged a pound a day of weight loss during my stay there). I do not know if there is a qualified dietitian on staff, but they were severely deficient in meeting my dietary needs.
In their quest to provide a clean environment, they forgot to respect my needs for comfort. I was removed from my room on a cleaning day and left alone to just sit for several hours in an empty room with no TV, no reading materials or any items of personal comfort. The staff was also deficient in meeting my basic comfort/health needs when my broken bed was not taken care of for 2 days. As a result, I suffered neck pain for many days. This should never have happened.
I am a 75-year-old woman who is vocal and can certainly advocate for myself. However, my concern is: who advocates for those who have no voice? I can’t imagine being at Country Villas without an advocate 24/7.
Other than a few staff members, NO ONE took the time to care. This is a deficiency in residents’ rights to receive care in a way that keeps or builds each resident’s dignity and self respect. My goal in submitting this review is to raise awareness and promote corrective action at Country Villas for those who are in their care now and in the future.

My motherhas been here for almost six weeks and I have been very pleased with the staff at every level. Occasionally something might have been overlooked, but when it ws addressed, the staff immediately rectified the situation. I love the 3 atriums where patients can relax outside, and that they allow dogs to come and visit. Fresh flowers through out also give it a very nice feeling. Very, very satisfied and pleased. I just wish they were closer to our home!
