I wish that I could give Arbor Cottage negative stars in my review. A dear friend of mine has a traumatic brain injury and moved to Arbor Cottage after spending three years in a hospital. From the first day my friend moved here, the CEO/Administrator acted in bad faith and immediately began breaching her fiduciary duty to care for my friend.
My friend went for weeks without crucial medications! Weeks! Not having these medications for several weeks sent my friend to the hospital (in an ambulance) 4 different times in a month!
If you find yourself tempted to sign the Admissions Agreement for Arbor Cottage, please do one thing for added peace of mind. ASK FOR REFERENCES. PLEASE. Ask for references from respite patients who have mended and gone home, from employees that have moved on (there are plenty of ex-employees). From placement agencies, who have sent patients to Arbor Cottage. Any reference. IF the CEO/Administrator provides you with references, please check them carefully. Specifically, Please ask this: Was all that was promised to you, delivered in the end? Did Arbor Cottage honor all of its contractual obligations? Was your loved one treated with respect and dignity? How would you describe the environment at Arbor Cottage? Was it serene and peaceful, or was it chaotic and frantic? Did you ever witness any flares of temper or vulgar language?
I recently helped my friend’s family with a legal dispute that they had with Arbor Cottage. This dispute was about $1,800 that Arbor Cottage owed to my friend’s parents. After a month of broken promises to pay, my friend’s parents had no choice but to come to San Diego from WA, to pursue legal remedies in small claims court.
The San Diego Superior Court Small Claims Court case number is: 37-2011-00001901-SC-SC-CTL.
This is the ruling from the Commissioner of San Diego Superior Court, Small Claims Court:
“The Court finds judgment on the Plaintiff’s Claim and Order to go to Small Claims Court for (name withheld) and against Arbor Cottage Retirement Corporation in the amount of: $3,800.00 principal, $50.00 costs, $pre-judgment interest. The Court finds that the Defendants actions were in bad faith and awards $2,000.00 punitive damages Per Civil Code 1950.5."
Did you notice the raving review on this site that gives Arbor Cottage At Upas, 5-stars in every category? It is the first review written and is located at the very bottom of the reviews. The administrator of Arbor Cottage wrote it. Read it carefully and then go to her website Compare what is written here with the Facility Description at The similarity is too strong to be coincidental. And yet, even with a review that you know the Administrator/CEO wrote, Arbor Cottage has an average rating of only 3-stars, prior to this review. What would the average rating at Arbor Cottage be without the review that the Administrator wrote?
One last thing: It is important to mention that the literature that Arbor Cottage at Upas provides to potential clients is misleading, inaccurate and potentially dangerous to rely on. IF you choose to move to Arbor Cottage, please be very, very specific in every phase of the admissions process. Let me give you an example: If you normally take your medication at 8 am and then again at 8 pm, please make sure that the medication schedule is written into the contract with the exact time schedule you normally take your medications. It is not enough to say medications will be given twice daily. Being vague with something as important as your medications, could result in receiving your medication at noon and then again at 3 pm (if at all).
I wish you God’s Speed and good luck in your search for a place for you, or a loved one, to safely reside. I know that the task you are undertaking in an effort to find the right place is not an easy one. That is the reason I feel compelled to leave such a harsh, but true, review.

you get what you pay for. my friend was the only one in the home for a while and was taken in at $1900mo, and now that i see the average price for a resident, it makes sence why she is treated so poorly.

it seems that you get what you pay for at this facility. if you don't pay at a high level than the care level is less than fair and it becomes vary obvious when new residents move in. the administrator is less than professional and the care givers come and go with none staying for long periods of time. a resident should not be treated differently or even poorly because of a difference with a friend or family member of the resident.

this is such a cute little place. it feels like a bed and breakfast. the caregivers are always ready to attend and the food is great! there is plenty of outdoor space with yards and decks and fruit trees. my mother was really happy there. they always made sure she was well groomed and attended to, taken out to parks, outings.. when she felt up to it. there are 2 adorable bostons that really made mom happy and kept her company. Thank you Arbor Cottage for taking such good care of her!! You made a huge difference to our family. thanks again.
