07/27/2011  -  An OurParents User Writes:

Having always been very independent and self-sufficient, when the time came that my mom couldn’t manage living by herself anymore, it was very difficult for her. Accepting she couldn’t do all the things she used to do and instead would be relying on others was a frightening concept. My husband and I moved her in with us for several years, but when her vision and mobility worsened to the point that one of us needed to be home 24 hours a day it became impossible for me to give her the time and care she needed and still take care of my other responsibilities. As she’d always only lived alone or with family, the thought of moving her and her living with people who were “strangers” , was probably just as frightening to me as it was to her.
Because she is mostly wheelchair bound and has very little sight, I knew she would need the individualized attention that only a small residential care facility could provide. But with close to probably 100 care homes in San Diego North County, I knew it was going to be difficult to find the “right” one for her. Knowing her budget, wanting her to be close by and wanting wherever she lived to give her (and me) a sense of comfort and a feeling of “being at home”, I went through a daunting search to find just the right place where she’d be happy and I wouldn’t feel so guilty. With all the various websites that provide partial listings of the res. care homes in the area and the lack of specific information about each one, I soon realized it was going to take me a huge amount of time and effort if I was truly going to “hand-pick” the right one for her rather than just go with the first one that was clean, licensed, close and priced right.
After having compiled a list of all the nearby places (as none of the lists I found online were complete…), driving by about 50 of them, calling about half of them and personally visiting about half of those (so now I was down to about 12), I narrowed it down to two of them. The one I chose however, I chose because I knew it was where my mom would be happiest.
I’m 53, so it’s hard for me to imagine what it would be like to find myself moving into a house with strangers as roommates and having to rely on people I don’t know to help take care of my daily needs. But I do know that if I were to find myself in that position, I would want to be around people who were not just kind and caring but sociable and the types of persons that I could see developing friendships with. And I’m not just talking about caregivers, but the other residents too.
Ironically, Buena Creek Residential was the first place I personally visited and the one I ultimately decided on for my mom. Fortunately, when I brought her there to “check it out”, she wholeheartedly agreed. The fact that there were both men and women living there, I admit was a plus, and Skittles, the little Chihuahua being there, definitely added another sense of “home” to the environment. Vesna, who runs Buena Creek Residential, has experience as a Pharmacy Technician, which given the multitudes of medications my mom takes gave me added comfort. And the loving care and compassion that the girls give to all the residents is more than I could have ever hoped for.
At the time of my writing this review, a couple of vacancies have become available at Buena Creek; one because Bob, who was there for many, many years recently passed away and Sarah, whose husband was in an Alzeimer’s facility, was able to find a place suitable for the two of them to live together once again. If you have a loved one who is looking for a residential care home, wants to be someplace where they can feel a sense of belonging and companionship and you want the assurance that they will be cared for with the same sense of love and respect as you would give them, I sincerely urge you to check out Buena Creek Residential. I’ve never written any online reviews for anything, but they certainly get my vote and my thanks!
