#ElderCareChat 9/16/15: Strategies for Healthy Aging

Many Seniors Enjoy Trying New FoodsDuring Wednesday’s live discussion, 35 new and returning participants discussed strategies for staying vital and dynamic as we grow older, in keeping with September’s Healthy Aging month theme. We were pleased to welcome Dr. Deborah Kado and her team from UC San Diego’s Center for Healthy Aging and Stein Institute for Research on Aging (known on Twitter as @UCSDHealthAging). Dr. Kado is the Deputy Director of the Stein Institute for Research on Aging. She is also Associate Professor in the Departments of Family and Preventive Medicine and Internal Medicine at UC San Diego, and has clinical expertise in Internal Medicine, Geriatrics, and Metabolic Bone Disease. Furthermore, she serves at the Academic Geriatric Resource Center and the Women’s Center of Excellence.

There were many excellent suggestions from participants on integrating, increasing and maintaining age-and-stage-appropriate levels of physical activity, social connectedness, emotional health, mental wellness, and brain fitness. Please take time to review the full transcript to see all the insights shared.

Discussion questions are embedded in the Storify excerpt below, which features the tweets from our guest expert, Dr. Deborah Kado — who approved of dark chocolate and coffee in moderation (read her answer to Q4 for the evidence!):
