Join the July 19, 2017 #ElderCareChat: Arts, Culture, Storytelling & Aging

Each month, join #ElderCareChat, a real-time forum for sharing experiences and expertise in eldercare! Follow @OurParents and @ElderCareChat on Twitter to contribute to the conversation.

The next #ElderCareChat will be held on Wednesday, July 19, 2017, from 1-2 pm ET with guest panelist Nora Rahimian, Helpline Coordinator with Alzheimer’s Greater Los Angeles. Via the organization’s Twitter account @alzgla, Rahimian will share insight on how arts, culture, and storytelling have the power to change our relationships with aging, dementia, and eldercare. She brings more than a decade of crisis response and counseling experience to Alzheimer’s Greater Los Angeles’ helpline, where she is a first responder for caregivers and their families. In that capacity, she uses her background in arts for change and community-building to create supportive spaces, both on- and offline. In addition, Rahimian leads ALZGLA’s #BeyondALZ TwitterChat, which takes place every Wednesday at 6:30 pm PST.

Previously OurParents.com has written about the role storytelling plays in strengthening and preserving family bonds. There are therapeutic benefits for older adults in sharing their stories, as well as for younger generations. Based on hearing these stories, children and grandchildren tend to be more resilient since they have a clearer understanding of their family histories.

Additionally, OurParents.com has explored the lasting benefits of art therapy for seniors, which include a decrease in anxiety and an increase in brain stimulation among dementia patients. We have cited programs in which art and dance have been used successfully in memory care environments. Giving a scientific basis to these anecdotal findings, neurologists confirm that the older brain responds well to art since it gives the brain’s two hemispheres to work more closely together. Mr. Rahimian will shed additional light on this topic by describing the beneficial aspects of art she has encountered in working with older adults.
