The next #ElderCareChat will be held on Wednesday, December 13, 2017, from 1-2 pm ET, with guest panelist Gail Kohn, coordinator of the World Health Organization Age-Friendly DC. Via the Age-Friendly DC Twitter account (@AgeFriendlyDC), Kohn will lead us in a discussion about the importance of age-friendly communities, and steps we can take to create an inclusive and accessible environment for residents of all ages.
Gail Kohn has been the World Health Organization Age-Friendly DC coordinator for five years—ever since the position was created. Her goal is simple: to help make Washington, DC, an easier community in which to grow older.
To accomplish this, she has engaged in a four-step process: 1) listening to DC residents, 2) planning with a task force that includes DC leaders and deputy mayors, 3) implementing government and community-wide strategies, and 4) evaluating the results.
In November, the World Health Organization and AARP recognized the outstanding work completed by Age-Friendly DC, and the mayor of Washington, DC, initiated the 2018-2023 Age-Friendly DC journey to continue the progress that has been made.
Throughout her career, Kohn has planned and administered innovative residences and programs for people who have reached 60 and beyond. She is known for striving for excellence as well as urging colleagues to meaningfully engage older adults in governance and staffing the national, state, and local organizations she has led.
Prior to her current role with Age-Friendly DC, Kohn was president of the Continuing Care Accreditation Commission; president of the Mid-Atlantic Association for Non-Profit Homes for the Aging; board member of the first Village to Village Network; founding executive director of Capitol Hill Village; and founding executive director of Collington, a continuing care retirement community in Maryland known for its racial, faith-based, and financial diversity.
