I worked for the verandas assisted living of wheat ridge for a short amount of time. I am not one to normally say bad things about people or places but I feel i would be doing a disservice by not saying anything. I was heart broken to see the lack of care/attention to the residents. The facility would not be if it werent for the residents but they are pushed aside and the very last concern of that place. The caregivers try their very best but are so over worked and have more and more added to their plates every second of the day. The pay starts out at 9.50 an hour and they seem to do everything they can to keep from giving raises. The hardest working upper level employee there is the weekend manager. They work her like a slave but she remains upbeat, she never takes breaks and keeps a smile on her face all day. In one day this poor girl had to train two new hires at once, give three tours, order medications for both houses (32 residents), work the floor as a caregiver, help prep food for the next day, talk to pharmacies, families, hospice nurses, and upper management. She never took breaks and stayed at least an hour late every evening to make sure things were done. She never changed her time sheet and did not get paid for her extra time. She was also called in a few night shifts, with her child, to pour and administer medications. Upper management are nice girls but not management material. They come in late most shifts and leave early. They do not come in on their time off to help. They tell staff that if they do not pick up extra shifts they will not ok vacation time. And they do not so much as offer to help when they are in the facility and state that the owner will not allow them to work the floor and help out. They are hardly in the facility, most of the time they are out to lunch or breakfast, or getting their nails done or visiting their own family. They leave for hours at a time and come back long enough to straighten up their desks and go home. The owner is the most unpleasant and unprofessional person i have ever meet. She is completely rude to her staff and has no problem going off on them or embarrassing them. ALL of the caregivers have nothing but bad things to say about her. She is hardly ever in her facility and has no clue what goes on there. She knows nothing about her residents and does not care to learn about them. I was informed by her directly that she does not hire what she calls "f.l.k.'s" (funny looking kids/people). She also will not hire anyone with a thick accent or men. If a male came in to fill out an application we were informed to let them fill it out and once they left we were to throw it away because it would not be looked at. Fresh fruits and vegetables are not offered or provided aside from bananas. Most of the food is packaged items that you add water to. One resident is diabetic and the owner will not allow foods for his needs to be prepared. The menus are on an 8 week rotation. The residents complain about how awful the food is and that they want different things. The owner likes the food, it is to my understanding that she made the menus based off of her own likes and refuses to let them be changed. She believes the residents do not know what they are talking about. New mattresses are never purchased. They are stained and soiled and staff is told to put a mattress cover on them so families do not see how nasty they are. The homes smell of urine. Activities are never done with the residents. Again the staff is so over worked that there is NO time in the day for them. Many residents need to be toileted throughout the day but there is no time for that either. The residents get changed in the morning when they are woken up and at night before they are put to bed. The only time you see residents out of their rooms is at meal times. If staff tries to sit and talk to residents as they are going around cleaning bathrooms they are told not to because there is no time for it and it will put them behind schedule and other work such as laundry will not get done on time. Residents walk around with uncombed hair, fecal matter under their nails, teeth not brushed and hands not washed unless it is their scheduled shower day. They are only allowed two showers a week and if they have an accident staff is told to wipe them down with wet wipes or rags because there is no time for extra showers. When residents complain about week day managers and the owner you know something is just not right. I beg of you please find a better home for your family member and a better company to work for. I would not wish this place on my worst enemy and i feel sorry for the people that are already there. This place is nothing more that ply wood and paint. It is a facade and you will be lied to the second you walk in the door. It is dirty and it smells and is just not a good place. The owner worked with special needs kids before she opened the verandas and has no clue what it takes to run that place. K.

my grandmother lived there and we had so many complaints in the time she was there, the owner gets very defensive when confronted with things, the managers are always out of the building, the lowest paid employees are the caregivers and they are the only ones doing the jobs. The place is dirty and I seen staff moving from food prep to helping a resident in the restroom, didn't see hand washing. There are uneven cement areas in the outside areas that can be a fall risk. The owner doesn not treat the residents with respect and dignity, I seen her be quite nasty to the elders. I could not get my father out of this place fast enough!
