My father passed away recently at Braden River Care Center. He was a resident on the Memory Care Unit for 10 months. We visited often and at different times of the day. The beds are always made and the rooms clean and tidy. The dining room gets disinfected after every meal, at which time you will find the residents congregating in the hall until the room, which doubles as an activity room becomes available again. The biggest thing I want to share is that the caretakers really seem to like these residents. Most of them are so kind and patient. Our main nurses were all different personalities; each were so kind and skilled and hardworking. Our nursing assistant was top notch. My father really responded to her, and he was not always easy to deal with. He looked beautiful when she was finished getting him ready for the day or after meals. She has worked there for over 2 decades. That says something about the place! Having someone in a home is so hard, and you have to change your mindset on what it should look like. On occasion, Dad looked a little rumpled when someone different cared for him, but that is to be expected. His basic needs were always met from what we could tell. Although he was in a chair most of the time, he never had a bedsore until a little bit the last week. That had more to do with not eating and pain with moving too much. A couple of times he had some redness, but it was always addressed and treated so that it would not progress. I was amazed at how good his skin looked up til that last week. The family has a responsibility to visit and take time to observe and get to know the staff and make your requests known to the staff in a respectful way. We tried to do that, and the staff always responded in kind. Helen Hackman, the nurse Manager is extremely professional, experienced (she opened the unit many years ago), and most responsive to your expressed concerns. I believe the staff is properly trained on how to treat the dimentia patients, as they were very appropriate with the residents and didn't get flustered when residents became angry or aggressive. When that happened, three or four staff members would run to calmly help. The staff mostly seemed very relaxed, which tells me as a nurse, that the staffing is adequate most of the time. They have a great routine on the unit. That helps the residents as well as staff. Dimentia patients need routine. Dad seemed more peaceful at BradenRiver than he did at home. He never asked us to take him home. Ironically, while at our home, he was always trying to escape and "go home." The activities person has a unique role and spends a lot of time not only entertaining residents, but responding to other needs they have.During entertainment, the staff sing and dance around even with the residents! Tidewell Hospice joined forces with us the last week of Dad's life, providing incredible support. I am telling you, we felt like celebrities. The staff at Braden River couldn't do enough for us as we said good bye to Dad. Daily, management and staff came by to check on us. They listened, laughed with us, and cried with us. Some of the caretakers that I did not know as well and maybe were not as skilled as our usual person, were very responsive to our requests for personal care of Dad if we thought they had forgotten to do something we thought should be done. We tried to get to know them and understand where they were coming from. Think about doing their job. It is a calling, I think. God bless the people who care for our aged parents and loved ones day in and day out. Braden River has given me a new appreciation for Nursing Homes. We will always be grateful to them.

Nurse was screaming at patient and told him he belonged in a mental hospital. Urine and bloody bandage left on floor for 2 days, until I picked it up. 3 patients using the same razor. Short staffed facility.

My Mom was a resident in your dementia unit since 2006. I can not begin to thank Chris, the administrator and Helen Hackman, head nurse and the rest of your staff from 4 East unit. And also your entire staff that makes Braden River Care Center the best place in Manatee County for Nursing home needs. The care, Love and compassion she got within your facility is unfounded! She spent her last 18 hours under your care with the assistance of Tidewell Hospice, together you made it a very peaceful experience for my Mom as well as myself. The entire night and day, as staffers found out of her declining health, they stopped by to visit us both and make sure any and every need was met. I could not have asked for a more pleasant experience under the circumstances. When she did finally pass that evening, again, as word got out, staffers one by one came by and asked to say goodbye and expressed their sincere Love for my Mom. How could anyone ask and/or expect such a high standard to be met with regard to the care of their loved one? I would only hope that not only will you share my sentiments with your staff but also make a copy and proudly display it in your lobby for all to see. And use it as a tool to all prospective families considering your facility for a family member. And more importantly present it to the State Agencies that often don't realize how well your efforts far go beyond the standards put in place. ~ With my deepest Gratitude and Respect, Irene Ryan PS: the negative commenter on this very site has her own reputation for lacking in respect for caregivers and all they do. She also has no valid health or care related issues with this fine residence or its staff. My honest review -Truth; any negative comments - non sense; care at Braden River Care Center - PRICELESS!
