My husband and I looked for a retirement community setting that was beautiful both inside and outside. When we drove into the Garlands of Barrington's Campus with its lovely gardens and architectural beauty and after a tour of the inside, admiring the Frank Lloyd Wright design, we both looked at each other and said "We could live here!" That was the beginning of a "happy marriage" between us and the Garlands. What would we say is the first and foremost thing we love about the Garlands? It is the highly talented and skilled staff that constantly meet our needs and the friendly people who come from all over the United States that we live with on a daily basis. We find one of the most unique things at the Garlands, among several, is the four smaller and more intimate restaurants that are offered. The Grill is our favorite. Chef Nick is very creative and puts his heart and soul into each one of his gourmet dinners. We have heard so many people say, "We wish we would have moved sooner. We are glad we did and we are proud to be living here at the Garlands of Barrington!

My grandparents thoroughly enjoy the neighborhood & community feel that "The Garlands " has to offer. They take delight in the excellent cuisine in both fine dining and casual atmospheres. They love attending the special events, especially those with music and art. Also, my grandpa has reignited his passion for fitness by visiting the gym on a regular basis. Our extended family loves visiting during the holidays for the community meals and music events. I am so happy my grandparents have found a place to call home as they enjoy their retirement.

The Garlands is a lovely facility, very clean and well maintained. But after the sale, when I think acclimation is the most important, the staff drops the ball. No real orientation or encouragement to meet others. Lots of maintenance issues with appliances--and the staff is not very happy to help fix them. The food at the Garlands is good, but the nursing facility food is BIG step down. Tasteless and unappetizing. I've been to other less posh facilities that feel more like family and less pretentious.

Response: It sounds as though the 'Cuz you Care committee, which is member run was not adequate to the orientation here in independent living. Not only does the 'cuz you care committee assist in the first few weeks of moving in, but our staff does as well. As far as maintenance, this is the first I have heard of an issue. We have staff on-site 24-7 to assure any issues our members have are tended to immediately. If the appliance is not repairable, it is replaced immediately. The comment regarding food really surprises me. All the food here at The Garlands is prepared in the main kitchen. Members in assisted living, memory enhancement and skilled nursing all have the opportunity to order off a menu, which offers many choices. This is not typical among assisted living facilities which offer one choice for each meal, generally served from steam tables, which our food here is not. If you would like to discuss this further I can be reached directly at 847.756.3246 or Thank you, Dawn L. Kempf, VP of Sales and Marketing
