09/10/2013 An Interested Visitor Writes: Well, I think the place is nice and just right for my dad. He needs the 24/7 attentive care that they offer and I have seen the nurses and aids being affectionate toward him. Yeah, maybe the food isn't the greatest, but it meets nutritional guidelines and standards. We bring special food in when we visit if we feel he would like a treat. As far as most of the residents not having family...I know for a fact that's not true. I was there with my family on Family Day to visit. There were tons of family members...filled up the whole ballroom. They had live music, a mini petting zoo, and homemade root beer floats! There were many friendly volunteers to help with the event, and family members of all ages from babies on up! As far as being banned from visiting a family member...I agree with a previous poster...it can't have been done without Merritt! You must have done something against the rules your just not sayin!

Some of the other posters here must not be in touch with the realities of a nursing home.
I can't believe that someone lived there who wasn't sick and then died because of the place. You will not be admitted to a state veterans' home if you are not sick enough to be put on the long waiting list.
I can't believe that a facility randomly bans all family members from visiting. There are two many channels for recourse should be true and not warranted.
I am certain that, like any other facility, the food likely does not compare with a fine dining restaurant or mom's home cooking. Bring Dad some food or take him out to eat if he is well enough to leave. I believe that each veteran keeps $200 a month for their own spending.
This facility is a bargain for Illinois vets. We need more facilities like this one. Petition your legislators for more beds throughout the state.

Response: WELL IT IS TRUE. My dad was not allowed calls or visits from his kids. We had to go to court to resolve this. Presently we are only allowed 3 hours a day to call and cannot visit at all as we all work and are not allowed to visit on weekends.
IT IS TRUE, many residents died last winter of the flu, I was told this by the Director of the facility. Regarding food and water,I'm sure nutritional guidelines are followed; but its not home cooking and since we cannot visit how are we supposed to bring food?
Yes it is a bargain, but its loud and looks like a hospital not a home. If it is a patients last resort because they have no family then it's not too bad. But we want to care for our dad. The VA home follows the wishes of the POA not the resident. Dad wants to leave, he's not allowed.

Response: No actually it IS NOT true. The VA home does not have the legal ability to bann family members without cause. There must have been something series that happened that caused such a bann and probably resulted in a court order, which allowed the administrators of the facility to set parameters for visitation and phone calls from his family. This was most likely done with the best interest of the resident in mind.
My dad is also there and I find the facility to be clean, well maintained. The nurses are friendly and attentive. Yes the environment is more sterile than one's own home might be, but it has been my experience that Altzheimer's patients actually prefer a less stimulating physical environment. And I'm sure that the experts who designed the wing had this in mind.
Also, you act as though the VA is a horrible place to end up, when in fact it is a blessing and godsend for our beloved veteran's who served our country. In many ways I feel it is better than many other nursing care facilities.
If you've gone to court for an injustice then surely you are now allowed to see and speak with your father.

07/16/2013 An Family Member of Current/Past Resident Writes: My father was there for five years. He passed away this Spring. I have nothing but good things to say about the staff, the care provided him, and respect they provided him and my family. I have visited many nursing homes over the years to see family or friends. This home is head and shoulders above what I have experienced in the past both in the LaSalle general area and throughout the state of Illinois.

06/12/2013 An Family Member of Current/Past Resident Writes: My siblings and I are banned from calling or visiting our father. Only his (2nd)wife is allowed to speak to him. Staff calls us troublemakers because Father does not want to be there. Their therapy seems to be - demand the family neglect the patient until he forgets everything. We would have never agreed to his placement here if we had known they wouldn't allow us to see him or even call him. When we call to ask how he is all they will say is, "he's fine". When asked "do you say that about everybody?" they answered yes.

    1

Response: This is what I thought at first, but the more inquiries I made to the staff about my father, the more rude they became. Now I (and my brother and sister) are banned from any contact with him, and we have no idea how he is doing.

04/14/2013 An Family Member of Current/Past Resident Writes: All but one rateting is just a ONE what does that say about this home.

04/08/2013 An Family Member of Current/Past Resident Writes: Strange to me I know some of the patients are old but not all of them are nor are all of them sick I know my dad wasn't sick when he went in there he was only there alittle over 1yr and he died makes me wonder since in one month 16 people died strange or just my imagination wish I checked this place out alot better than I did but they make it a habit of falling all over you when you are a new patient and whan you asking about the care before you put your loved one in there sure I had never put my loved one in there he probably would still be alive.

    1

Response: That is very Strange 16people in one month alone wonder how many in the other months???????

03/29/2013 An Family Member of Current/Past Resident Writes: Miss treat Patients alot of falls and patient neglect from aides and most nurses food not fit for humans to eat God forgive those who are doing this to our loved ones who gave so much so they could have FREEDOM AND GOOD PAYING JOBS SHAME ON YOU's. May you get treated the same way some day.

03/24/2013 An Family Member of Current/Past Resident Writes: Very neglectful towards pt and food is not fit for a dog sad these men gave so much for our freedom to be treated the way they are. Not good staff or Administrator or D.O.N or Assistant D.O.N. Pt left dirty wet and not given water unless they can get it themselves,it is never in their reach.Pt are truly neglected here and not just because they say they are understaffed they just don't care about them.

Response: Looks like you reported this 4 times. Are you sure you are not an ex employee who got booted due to YOUR neflect or abuse? Hmmmm - makes me wonder.

03/09/2013 An Family Member of Current/Past Resident Writes: The staff seem to genuinely care about their patients.
I believe they do need more nurses and assistants though. Watching the staff when they don't know I am around, showed me that they did care about the patients by the way the handled them. The food isnt bad. It's just your typical cafeteria type food. Not mom's, but adequate.

    4

Response: You need to give it awhile then rate them and see what you put on the scale. Is your family member new there? Wait the longer they are there the worse they are treated and fed or given water, talk to some residents there that have been there awhile

Response: I VISITED MY DAD AND THERE WAS NO DRINKING WATER EASILY AVAILABLE. ARE ALZHEIMER'S PATIENTS SUPPOSED TO REMEMBER TO ASK FOR A GLASS OF WATER?

01/22/2013 An Current/Past Employee Writes: many sick calls and over worked

    1

Response: Not overworked alot of them are just LAZY and try to hide as much as they can or go on break for anywhere from 1/2 to 1 hour before it is time for them to change shifts. The aides run over the nurses and all in higher postions miss treat Patients also.

Response: There is a lot of standing around gossiping and not much interaction with patients beyond meals and bathing.

12/27/2012 An Family Member of Current/Past Resident Writes: We do not feel patients are kept clean or fed decent food. Some staff not very alert to patients needs.

    1

Response: I also agree whole heartedly to your remarks about this place it is a shame humans are treated this way after all they have given SAD SAD SAD.....

Response: But the staff was seen with elaborate spread of donuts, cheeses, pastries, fruit, set out for some kind of meeting; while residents eat smelly institutional food.

Response: Well my dad eats all three of his meals a day, plus snacks and doesn't complain. It may not be the greatest...why don't you bring food or treats for your loved one when you go? I see families doing this all the time there...KFC, Olive Garden. Dah...it's like kids school lunches...they're not the greatest, but it does the job
