09/05/2013 An Interested Visitor Writes: My mother lived in a duplex at Marquette for many years. Eventually, she moved into an apartment in the Manor, but after only a couple of months, had to move into the nursing home section. This area has very nice staff, but her level of care is no good at all. For $9,600 per month, she shares a very small, shabby room with a roommate, is fed so little at meals that she lost 19 pounds in less than a month, is often found without her oxygen on her, or hooked up, but not turned on! Her hearing aids are on the med cart, and the nurse is to give them to her in the am, but it isn't always done. Her doctor ordered a specific med that wasn't given to her until the third time he ordered it. Residents are taken to an activity, left in the room to wait and the activity staff doesn't always even show up! All in all, she pays an obscene amount of money every month for very substandard care. I would like very much to see her moved to a facility with a higher level of care.

Nursing care facilities cater to several types of patients: some patients require short-term rehab while recovering from surgery; others require long-term nursing and medical supervision. In addition, some nursing homes offer specialized care programs for Alzheimer's or other illnesses, or short-term respite care for frail or disabled persons when a family member requires a rest from providing care in the home. Please note that you can help compare nursing homes by looking at the Medicare ratings of a given facility (Medicare has a 5-star rating system for comparing nursing homes). There are various ways for paying for care in a nursing home. Make sure you know your loved one's Medicare and Medicaid eligibility, and understand how you can use tools like long term care insurance to pay for nursing home care.

Also, Marquette Manor is an assisted living facility. Assisted living facilities are an apartment-style habitat designed to focus on providing assistance with daily living activities. They provide a higher level of service for the elderly which can include preparing meals, housekeeping, medication assistance, laundry, and also do regular check-in's on the residents. Basically, they are designed to bridge the gap between independent living and nursing home facilities. When thinking about how to pay for care, assisted living facilities are generally less expensive than nursing homes, if assisted living is a viable option for your loved one.

Also, Marquette Manor is a Senior Community. Senior communities are for seniors who can take care of themselves. It is often a set of apartments in a variety of sizes from studios to large two bedrooms, where seniors live independently, but may receive additional services like transportation, pools, a convenience store, bank, barber/beauty shop, resident laundry, housekeeping, and security, are all services and amenities that may be provided there.

Also, Marquette Manor is a skilled nursing facility (SNF). It is primarily engaged in providing skilled nursing care and related services for residents who require medical or nursing care; or rehabilitation services for the rehabilitation of injured, disabled, or sick persons.

Skilled nursing facilities cater to patients who either need short-term rehab while recovering from surgery; or require long-term nursing and medical supervision. Skilled Nursing facilities are very often associated with area hospitals.
