My mother has been a patient at Rosewalk Village in Lafayette, Indiana for 3 years. The single most consistent problem with the care there is a lack of professional conduct among the staff. Gossip, rumor mongering, disregarding a patients' written treatment plan, failure to read and/or follow instructions given in the charge notes, etc., etc. The RV nursing home has a good director who is trying to improve the level of service provided to patients, but she consistently explains away unprofessional behavior, and fails to enforce any real negative consequences for staff members who violate the rules or are unprofessional. Unfortunately, most of the nursing home staff will only change and/or improve their behavior if they suffer a negative consequence. Another huge problem is the size of the double patient rooms on the 2nd floor and the poor air quality. The rooms are incredibly small and cramped. I am told that they meet the minimum requirement of the state of Indiana, but that is not saying much. Also, the 2nd floor air quality is really poor; it is stale and smells bad. One of the biggest problems is the incredibly poor diet provided by the home. The proteins used are high fat and low quality, such as very fatty sausage, which is served repeatedly. The food products purchased are of the cheapest quality possible, and very few fresh fruits or vegetables are served. To give you a frame of reference, I would say that the food quality is worse than most public school lunch programs. The food is really repulsive, and most of the staff and patients agree. If you have a loved one stay in this facility, you will need to be constantly on your toes, overseeing the care your loved person receives, and acting as their advocate. The number of mistakes made, accidentally or intentionally, are quite high.
