Three years ago, my wife and I made a choice. No one made it for us, and we certainly didn’t want our kids to make it for us. We lived in Fort Myers, Florida. We loved living there and loved our church. However, we both had a problem with the heat and humidity. The high humidity in Florida was a problem for my wife, who has COPD, and it kept me from walking and working outside. Years ago I had been a pastor in Winona Lake, and we knew about Grace Village. We made a trip up here and toured Grace Village. We certainly liked what we saw! It just “felt right.”
We went back to Florida and put our house up for sale. It sold in less than a year. It was a difficult decision for us, but we knew it was the right one for us both. We have never regretted it. We love Grace Village. Our new friends are like a new family.
We both wanted to be in a place where we could be used. We wanted to come here while we could still be active and enjoy the activities and opportunities here. My hobbies are working and walking. I have helped the maintenance men here and the opportunities for walking are great all year. My wife has played piano for a chapel service. We have a great library here.
Making Grace Village our home was not the end, but the beginning of a new life for us. We thank God he helped us make the choice.

In the words of my mother who has been a resident for 18 months, "You'd look a long time to find a place like this." I love the caring attitude of the staff. Lois Loder Aspin

Other homes put their state inspection information in the front lobby for all to be able to look at. This place must be ashamed, because their inspection information is not dislayed in the front lobby, like everywhere else. You have to ask for it. They keep it in the back somewhere. That's all I needed to know!

Grace Village holds a prestigeous reputation in the community. BUT, do not judge a book by it's cover: The skill level of some of their nurses does not measure up. (One example: My Mother's friend was sent to Grace Village straight from the hospital after a horrible fall and major surgery on her hip last week. She was in LOTS of pain. She was not given ANY kind of pain medication at Grace Village until the evening of the next day. So, she had to go the rest of the first evening, all night long, and the entire next day in pain so bad she could hardly move. Some nurses actually seemed upset with her because she wouldn't allow them to examine her until she got something for pain.). The CNAs there are fabulous and helpful, though. The food is the best and everyone seems friendly. The Physical Therapy folks are superior.
