I have read the bad reviews - and since I grew up in So Hadley had heard the rumors about the negative feedback, but my mother wanted to be as close to home as possible and she insisted we try it. We could always switch at any time.
Wile I admit she has only been there a little less than two weeks I have to say I am surprised by the ratings. Some of the nurses /CNA's are just average but most have been wonderful to my mother. Ironically the only one I didn't like ended up spending almost 3 straight hours with my mom after we had all gone home. He held her hand and just listened to her and spoke to her calmly and with respect and empathy until she fell asleep. She had had a panic attack - after a thoughtless housekeeper told her she should be home - why did her family 'stick' her in here? I can't begin to talk about that. I warned the administrator that if my mother ever sees her again we will fill a complaint. Contrary to what I expected the administrator called the woman to her office and explained what I said. She was, fairly, given an opportunity to explain herself. She wisely said nothing other than "I am so sorry". She has been warned, some of it done in my presence and moved to another floor after being sent home for the rest of her shift (they replaced her within 30 minutes) No facility has 100% perfect employees. But MANY of the nurses are excellent. And unfortunately I have been in MANY hospitals, some for as long as 3 months - I know something of good and bad care. And if those in charge are willing to address issues immediately and effectively that is huge.
Especially South Hadley residents, please visit the facility and talk to patients and staff alike before you dismiss Winegate over the Medicare rating. One patient who had multiple issues could be the entire source of low rating.
No place is perfect - and certainly if family and friends are visiting frequently there is very little to worry about. Perhaps if you are not local or there are few or no relatives who can visit at least 4-6 + days per week this isn't the place for you - and simply because of your comfort level. If my mothers care is indicative you should have nothing to worry about. Those who have spent all or much of their life in South Hadley or even Holyoke will enjoy seeing many familiar faces.
Give it a second look.

our father was sent home with out notification of the family despite being confused. Was allowed to leave without signing discharge paperwork and without the neccessary medications. The staff was rude when we went back to get his belongings. He was diagnosed with throat cancer a week after his discharge, despite complaints from family and pt. of sore throat, ear ache, and a foul odor coming from his mouth, during his stay at the facility. Not two months after discharge he died. The facility itself is beautiful, we found the care sorely inadequate and would advise anyone who was thinking of admitting a loved there to think again.

My mother had a very poor experience here on rehab post surgical after hip surgery. She contracted c.diff (resistant intestinal bacteria) within a day (may have been hospital acquired) and pain and discomfort exacerbated her memory disorder. She was unable to remeber the call button so she kept soiling the bed. No amount of requests on my part could get the staff to scheduled frequent check-in of her. A number of the staff were rude. Multiple times I was told I was not allowed to see her after "scheduled visiting hours" and that security would be called (Mass State law allows family to visit anytime). The Head Nurse was beyond rude and flatly refused to accomdate my mother's comfort needs. The Head Administrator offered platitudes that lead to no result. I ended up private paying for an independent CNA to stay 24hrs/day with my Mom for 2 weeks until she could return to assisted living. No way would I recommend this facility to anyone.
