My mother was a patient at Caretel Inn in Brighton. She had been there one week when I received a phone call from a nurse around 5pm asking if my mother had a history of sciatica as she had been complaining of severe leg pain all day. I immediately asked if anyone thought to check for a blood clot and the nurses response was that she would have to wait until the next day to have a Doppler scan ordered. I and my 19 yr old daughter went immediately to the facility. Upon coming down the hall to my mothers room, I heard an aide tell my mother that there was nothing wrong with her and she just needed to stop whining and eat her dinner. As soon as I walked into the room the aide darted out without one word to me. My mother grabbed my hand and told me to get her out of there because they were not taking care of her. I pulled the blankets off her leg to find her right leg ice cold to the touch and white! I called for a nurse with no response. My daughter had to run to the nurses station and yell for help. When the nurse came into the room and I showed her the leg, the nurse looked at me and asked what I wanted her to do! I demanded an ambulance be called and she was transported to UofM Emergecy and within a matter of about an hour my mother was taken to surgery where her right leg had to be amputated above the knee! My mother died within about 2 weeks afterwards because the surgery was just more than her body could handle! DO NOT take your family to this facility! It looks good from the outside but they do not care for the patients! I would rate this place lower than poor! Horrible treatment and care!

Response: i currently have a family member here for rehabilitation. I have noticed at first the proper meds were given, then were changed after the medication was discontinued by our family doctor, they once again were prescibing this to our loved one. We have continuously asked about the lack of notification of meetings with staff concerning our famliy member. Never are we given info, or answers to questions even after complaining to the management. I find often they over dose the person, especially to walk in and see your loved one totally a zombie, and I know they are not alright. I am appalled

As a family member of a parent residing at Caretel Inns of Brighton in Assisted Living (for over 2 years) -- I have been shocked to witness first-hand the management at the Leighton House Inn blatently lying to family (on at least 3 ocasions) when their loved one has fallen or experienced a significant injury in his/her room. The focus at Caretel Inns seems to be "CYA" to look good to the State of Michigan versus compassionate care for the elderly. Is this type of ongoing "cover-up" illegal?
