My mother has been in Byron Manor since November, 2012. After a fall, Mom suffered brain bleed to both frontal lobes. Because of this brain injury, her personality has been greatly altered. From the initial hospital stay, she went to a nursing home where she had some behavior issues and refused to take her medication resulting in some confrontations with the staff. She was transferred to a psychiatric hospital in Indiana where she stayed longer than we wished because it was difficult to place her in another nursing home. She returned to Michigan to a nursing home where she stayed a short time and was transferred to Pine Rest Christian Hospital for a medication adjustment. Back to the nursing home for one week and back to Pine Rest. At this point, Pine Rest suggested that we look not at nursing home care but at a dementia unit. We were given several facilities to tour and unanimously chose Byron Center Manor after seeing the beautiful state of the art design for their memory care unit. No long hallways--all rooms open to a large great room that is well lit and welcoming. Mom stayed a Byron Center Manor from November to the end of April when she needed another medication adjustment at Pine Rest.
Each of the three of her daughters has spent time with her at meals and at other times. We see the staff treat her with great respect and care. Their activities coordinator is outstanding. Activities are available 7 days a week. Because of her brain injury, our Mom can be difficult to handle, but the staff has been well trained to redirect her to lessen her agitation. We couldn't be more pleased with the care that Mom receives at Byron Center Manor.

I know someone who works at Byron Center Manor and they tell me all of the things some of the employees are doing. The Residents are not getting the quality of care that you would expect them to get. The treatments (walks, exercise, etc. ) they are suppose to be getting are not getting done and the employees sign the records that they are doing them. One of the residents was sick for over a week and they did not notify the family so when her family came to visit her they saw how sick she was and took her to the ER and she has pneumonia now. It is a horrible place and I would never want one of my grandparents living there. The employees are outright rude to the residents and they get away with it. You get rewarded for being a lazy worker, and in trouble or fired if you have a problem or try to bring it to management's attention that the residents are not getting very good care. They do not care. It is a business and it is all about MONEY!!
