08/16/2019  -  An Interested Visitor Writes:

My mother has resided at one of the Aleardi AFC homes for more than two years. Earlier this year, I spent a good deal of time in the home visiting her and doing doctor prescribed therapy on her. I witnessed constant neglect as the residents were largely ignored, verbal abuse directed at one of the residents, one of the wheelchair residents falling out of his chair onto his head several times and also falling off the toilet onto the floor as he was left unattended, residents being fed sliders and cheese-its for the evening meal, my mother being left daily sitting in waste (urine, stool, diarrhea (after this she experienced four UTIs in as many months and had to be hospitalized several times), my mother being fed breaded fish sticks when it states clearly in her care plan that she has celiac disease and is allergic to fish. Often my mother's hair was not combed and her teeth had not been brushed. The home has only one aide per shift to deal with six disabled adults. The aides are responsible for cleaning, washing laundry and putting it away, preparing, serving, and cleaning up after meals, changing and cleaning up soiled residents, showers. Early in her residence, my mother's head was covered with @#$% spots. The residents are rarely spoken to except to call them to meals but are left sitting on the sofa all day long with nothing to do and no one to talk to with the TV blaring in the background. There are no activities or entertainment of any kind provided to the residents, not even pet visits. Multiple studies have shown that lack of stimulation causes rapid decline and that TV is not good for elderly dementia sufferers. My mother has suffered rapid decline possibly due to the lack of any kind of stimulation and the opportunity to move about and exercise. This is a mother and daughter owned business with no oversight and if you complain, you are attacked and lied about. I have witnessed the aides at times disappearing for as long as an hour, watching TV shows of their choosing rather than seeing to the residents, spending the entire shift on their cell phone. If you must consider putting your loved one in an Adult Foster Care facility, please run, do not walk, as far away from this business as you can. You can find facilities that actually care about you family member. Aleardi's cares about the money they are collecting and does as little as possible for the residents.
