As a caregiver of a resident that has been here
5 years, I have noticed a changed in care recently as well as the quality of the meals and staff attitude. I am talking to the staff about what has caused this change and hope that they can give me some answers.

This is a really great place. The staff is very caring to my Mom. She is a high level of care and they do a fabulous job with her. She enjoys the activities and now having friends. It's nice to have the management team there 7 days a week. Her room has a lovely view. I wish the kitchen area was newer, but that is secondary. I visit about 4 times a week. The place is always clean.

My Dad is really enjoying his time at Brighton Gardens. At home he was lonely and depressed. Now he has friends and participates in many activities. We especially like the "family nights" the community host. They always serve lots of food and have good live music playing.

My Mom has thrived since moving into Brighton Gardens. She loves all the activities and most of all the food. Staff is very kind and friendly. They all her with everything. She is on their 2nd level of care. Worth every penny!

Staff sits and watches TV instead of engaging residents.

Beautiful facility and top notch nursing director, but it's downhill from there. Staff is apathetic and interdepartmental communication is exceedingly poor

INCOMPETENT NURSING STAFF UNTRAINED EMPLOYEES IN THE CARE OF ALZHEIMER PATIENTS

01/13/2009  -  An OurParents User Writes:

A close friend stays at Brighton Gardens, Florham Park, NJ and I have visited her no less than 30 times at various times of the day over the past 2 years. I also worked as an aide for 4 years in a similar facility and over the years have had many friends in various stages of assisted living or skilled nursing care in many assisted care or nursing facilities in 3 states. Being a division of Marriott Hotels, Brighton Gardens has built an attractive, well designed facility in Florham Park, NJ. But the similarity with Marriott ends there--Marriott's reputation for service was never transferred to this facility. The staff, especially the aides who are charged with the safety and care of the residents, are the most disinterested, unmotivated, laziest workers I have ever seen of all the facilities I have ever visited. It is the rule, not the exception, to see 2, 3 or even 4 aides sitting around in resident lounges, on every floor, watching tv or talking to each other for extended periods (up to 1 hour or more)at a time. They are cordial enough (perhaps because they are so well rested), but they never, ever do anything for the residents unless specifically asked, and then the request must be made multiple times. Of potentially greater concern is that according to my doctor, a resident should pray they never get seriously ill as the medical staff there is well known among doctors and even elderly care lawyers in the area, to be disinterested and nearly negligent. My friend once came down with an allergic reaction and the staff doctor mis-diagnosed and then mis-prescribed a drug that, had my friend's regular doctor not caught the error on a cordial visit, would have killed or caused permanent damage within a week. Management never apologized or even acknowledged the error and since my friend recovered and depends on the staff daily, the issue was not pushed. One must wonder though, how many residents have needlessly died or sustained unnecessary suffering due to staff negligence? Noteworthy is that neither the facility director or nursing director is ever seen walking around and policing the staff or facility operations as is typical and expected at other facilities. This might explain the nearly negligent staff to a large extent. I don't know if this management problem is a system-wide problem for Marriott or just isolated to Florham Park, NJ, but in my experienced observations, this might be an acceptable place to put a disliked mother-in-law, but I would never put my parents or someone I care for here! If you have any reason to doubt this post, please go visit the facility yourself; be sure to wander the floors unescorted (don't worry, no one will stop you) and observe the staff. And be sure to PRIVATELY ask the residents of their care.
