So rather than take this post as criticism I'm gonna assume that someone is gonna write a stupid 5 star review about the building is great or some other irrelevant false information. Says a lot about the building and the management in all honesty. I mean all these reviews are 100% accurate and I would NOT recommend working in this dump especially in that Kitchen. The Kitchen manager or "Chef" (if you wanna call him that) claims to know so much about culinary which isn't true in the slightest. Culinary means you know and have the capabilities to cook. The Kitchen manager has never demonstrated the ability to cook and instead has the reputation of burning pots and pans. In addition, everything in that Kitchen is store bought and frozen which last time I checked doesn't show cooking. The mediocrity continues though due to the fact that the fruit isn't even fresh. The fruit comes from a can. Hey I guess frozen and pre-made food though counts in culinary. Apparently also if the food looks like it came from a camels *** then that also counts as culinary. In addition, the building still has bed bugs and all other kinds of bugs. Poor management and pigsty Kitchen not much else to say. Thus, residents are actually slowly starting to leave. I feel sorry for the residents however, I can't in good faith recommend working in this building and sending your resident to this building.

A friend told me about this forum and thought I should check it out since my father is living at Albuquerque Grand. After reading the many reviews I have to say, like the local business owner who commented already, I see a trend that points to unhappy staff. Having been a long time business owner myself, I know how easy it is for terminated staff to take their grievances out in these public places without being held to any truthfulness. That's sad, but a fact of today's world. Here's what I do know - my father loves it here. He is involved in many programs, loves the staff (who treat him like he's their father, not mine!), looks forward to every meal and has made friends which is nice given how many he's lost over the years. Every time I visit him he is in good spirits and offers not the first complaint. Is every thing, every day perfect? No. But it isn't in anyone's life! I cannot say anything but "thank you" to the staff and management. Thank you for constantly improving the place my father calls "home." Thanks for constantly improving the quality of the staff (this current group is wonderful and caring beyond words) and raising the level and quality of services available to my father. Thank you for letting me rest easy knowing someone who took such good care of me is now being taken care of like the prince he is to me!
Experience is the greatest teacher. I find, after years at Albuquerque Grand, that the wretched comments posted here are simply personal attacks, not true experiences. So very sad.

I'm an Albuquerque business owner. It sounds like there's a lot of disgruntled employees. What I have found is those who post negative comments are not happy with their lives. I've visited today and came in late the gal was kind enough to tour me anyway. I found it very reasonable price. she was also kind enough to offer me a dinner. As we SAT and talked about what they have to offer, I rather enjoyed my meal. As someone looking for a home for their mother father I would suggest that people do their research. I sat at a table with four other ladies and all of them seemed extremely happy and enjoy their time at the Albuquerque grand. Its not important what other people say on a website. It's important that the people that live there sink of the building. I also went to another place last week. The staff were kind but the guests didn't seem as happy.

My aunt lives here and recently came from a rehab for a hip surgery when she fell at the Dr. office. She did well at the rehab but needed some extended care. We were immediately able to put a new care plan in place to get her what she needed. She came home with more help from the staff and help from a home health agency for her therapies. I don't think she will need the extra services for long but I am glad she is able to have them when she needs them.

My mother was a resident at the Albuquerque Grand, and recently passed away. As her rent ws paid throught the end of the month, my sister and I were cleaning out her apartment at a relaxed pace. After five days, we had almost everything out, so took that day off to go over paper work. My sister decided to go by at about 4:15 in the afternoon, and saw three employees in the launddry room area with some of my mother's belingings. The excuse was that they thought we were done and were donating these items (one of which was an expensive crystal lamp). No one ever called us to check.
I called to complain several times, left voice messages, but never heard back from the manager Tony, unless I demanded to be put through. Even on the day I was returning the apartment keys, I was told that he was sick, in his office, and couldn't see me.
Bottom line is that there are still some good employees here, but the manager is a coward and a weasel, and there are several employees who steal from the residents. Please don't be fooled by the responses that these problems have been corrected- all this happened in the last two weeks. IF YOU LOVE YOUR PARENT(S) DO NOT ALLOW THEM TO MOVE INTO THE ABQ GRAND.

A few weeks ago, I visited the Albuquerque Grand for my Dad. The manager, a very nice lady, had me convinced that this was a nice place. My dad is finally ready to see it, I called to schedule an appointment, only to find that the nice manager had been fired. I don't think I am interested in a place with such a bad reputation with regards to staff. Thanks but no thanks

I recently started a search for a place for my 87yo mother in law who was in rehab and came across The Albuquerque Grand. First off the price was very nice and we needed a place fast so we moved in. Within the first day of her being a "resident" I was horrified. The assisted living manager that assessed my mother in law was wonderful but she was only there a few days before I was told she was gone. I had issues to discuss like the non working call system for residents to call for help. The phone did not work, the heat was broken in the whole building. The meals that the residents were expected to eat were not fit for a pig's slop. I wanted to stay with my mother in law the first afternoon of her move and decided to have lunch:(
Boy was I surprised!!!!!!. We were served at noon in a cold dining room. The meal consisted of instant runny mashed potatoes, under cooked chicken thighs, brown soggy green beans and that's it..... I was also informed that it was going to cost $10.00. The receptionist Jo Ann came to me and said in a very rude way" You owe 10 bucks for that food" I was a little shocked but paid her and then I loaded my mother in law in my car and took her home. I looked into the Albuquerque grand and found this website. I wish I would have looked before I subjected my poor mother in law to that place. The operators licence is in the name of a previous employee and none of the caregivers have passed state background checks. The owners Susan and Bill Tuthill are not worried about the welfare of the frail elderly people they have been blessed to take care of, the are money hungry and they employ a thug named Anthony Cataldo. I know this because I tried to retrieve my deposit and was verbally assaulted by Mr. Cataldo. STEER CLEAR OF THIS PLACE IF YOU HAVE AN OUNCE OF LOVE FOR YOU FAMILY MEMBER!!!!!!!!!

Response: The residents were told that the Communications company that were in charge of the phones went out of business...that was a lie.
There hasn't been an Assisted living manager since this person was fired....more than a month ago. This is illegal

Response: Yes it is and if you want to report them to the state of new mexico dept of health here is the number TEL: (800) 445-6242. You can report anonymously. LET'S GET THE RESIDENTS THE CARE THEY DESERVE AND GET THIS PLACE SHUT DOWN!!!!!!!!!

    Response: Actually.....800-752-8649.. Call right away

As I sit here and read these comments, I am shocked. Let me add my experience. Last week, I called to get some information for my Aunt. The person who answered the phone, after I called about 3 times with the phone just ringing off the hook, was rude and rather ignorant. I was flabbergasted. Not to mention, I could hardly understand her. She said her name was Joan or Joann or something. She acted like I was a waste of her time. She then put me on hold. I sat there until I finally hung up. I did not call back. I definitely am not going to pursue that place any further. Maybe they need to take a look at their "first impression". I wonder how many other folks have experienced this.

Thanksgiving was very bad. The dining room was closed at 4:00 pm and no one was served any dinner. I pay for dinner, and am very upset. Even a sandwich would have been good. No one told us they were going to do this, I found out when I went down at dinner time.

10/26/2013  -  An OurParents User Writes:

This is what the Albuquerque Grand does:
They put on a good show when you show interest and want to move in. They get real excited when you pay your rent.
As soon as they have your money, you see how ugly they actually are.

08/27/2013  -  An OurParents User Writes:

Bedbugs! Employees stealing from residents! Residents being kicked out of living areas because the managers don't want to see them! They want the residents in their rooms at all times except for meal times. This place is @#$%!

Response: Yeah and I wonder who wrote this comment - wouldn't be surprised if it was Jojo

08/26/2013  -  An OurParents User Writes:

As I read all of these "reviews" it is sadly obvious that a few ex-staff are the source of the negative comments and false statements being made. The owners and the management of Albuquerque Grand take their care of the seniors who live at the Grand VERY seriously. As a result of that diligence they identified and terminated several non-performing staff. The bottom line is that the remaining staff and experienced management are, indeed, very responsive, highly knowledgeable, and extremely committed to treating the residents with respect, care, and dignity. The owners of Albuquerque Grand have a long history in Albuquerque, an even longer history in serving seniors and they have high expectations of everyone who works for them. I feel great pride in my position at the Grand. I am respected, I love the residents, and I love that "work" can be such a happy place to be! Don't believe a few angry staff who were "caught" and terminated - believe the rest of us still here, still loving our residents, and still happy to work with the rest of our terrific co-workers. The Grand is, as one review stated, GRAND!!

Response: Which one is well trained.... The driver doing assisted living AND working in the dining room?

Response: This defender must be living in outer space (in her mind)! The Albuquerque Grand is not being lied on. Past managers treated the residents like children; stole from the company and from residents. The residents were so intimidated that some were afraid to hold conversations outside their rooms. Get the public records on how maby people have moved out the past six monthsl they are still moving out. That place is not fit for homeless people.

08/25/2013  -  An OurParents User Writes:

my neighbor here at the Grand told me about all the lies being told on this place. My family lives in assisted living and likes the place even better now that they kicked out a crazy mean man that lived there and never paid his rent.

08/24/2013  -  An OurParents User Writes:

The review is clearly written by an abusive ex - resident who was forced to move out due to unacceptable behavior. Our remaining residents are happy for that and happy to live where their safety, security, and comfort are provided for by a caring and professional staff. Albuquerque Grand represents owners with over 40 years of experience and commitment to seniors - for all of us at Albuquerque Grand this is a passion not a paycheck.

Response: How can you say they live in a safe place when the pull cord system in the rooms does not work. The residents can NOT call for help with a broken call system. One might say well they can use their phone but IT IS NEVER WORKING EITHER!!!!!! The residents can not call out half the time and the other times you can't call in. The people that own this place are rude and only worried about the money. Perhaps the owner should have used some of the money she spent on her huge nasty fake chest on fixing the call boxes in the residents rooms. Then when they needed help they could get it.

08/21/2013  -  An OurParents User Writes:

The Grand is Grand!!! Staff is wonderful, friendly and helpful - always smiling. Food is good, service is good. My family is very happy to live at the Albuquerque Grand and will be living there for a long, long time.

Response: That is a lie. Everyone knows this place is a @#$% hole. No ac during the summer. No heat during the winter. the tuthills should sell thie place to someone who actually cares for these poor people. I feel sorry for the residents and the staff. Someone should call larry barker from channel 7. They need to be shut down before someone dies. The mamagers are discusting and mean. How many people have to get food poisioning. The kitchen smells of raw sewage. And its so dirty in there the staff won't even eat there. Don't subject your parents to this hell hole.

Response: The horror stories that have come from fired staff is unbelievable. One caregiver walked out when she was instructed to "borrow" meds from one resident to give to another, because they forgot to re-order in time. They planned to return the meds when the reorder came in. If anyone were ever to bother to take interest and investigate, I bet you could find previous staff that would talk.

Response: you must be the drug addict that was kicked out for fighting and stealing. We are glad you are gone. How is life in jail?

Response: No. He/she is not the drug addict that was kicked out. It is a person who is telling the truth. Why don't you move in to the "grand" and see for yourself.

Response: No. He/she is not the drug addict that was kicked out. It is a person who is telling the truth. Why don't you move in to the "grand" and see for yourself.

Horrid and hopeless. This place has so many scary issues its not even funny!
I think somebody needs to help us we are scared to speak up
We are chased out of common areas and poked if we fall asleep
Our toilets stay clogged for days with sewer smell and
The A/C never works and our Internet has been out for weeks yet we still
Pay for it! Someone please help!!!!!

Response: pay your rent on time as you promised when you moved in and signed the lease. This is not a free government housing project. You must be 1 of the 3 or 4 deadbeats that never pay for anything service on time and always complain. Hurry up and move out so the rest of us can enjoy our life.

Response: So.....What, you managers saying that rent has to be paid before you fix the clogged toilets and a/c???? Be careful what you are admitting to.

08/03/2013  -  An OurParents User Writes:

I still live at the Grand, but don’t know what to do anymore. I can’t find a place to live that I can afford, but I can’t afford to live here anymore. I am looking, and may even move out of state.
First, they took the grace period away for my rent. I used to have a couple of days to wait for my SS check to come in. Now, if I can’t pay ON the first of the month, I have to pay 10% late fee. (I get my check on the 3rd). Then, they raised the rent!
The food has always been disgraceful….But has even gotten worse. The owner cut the food budget, now we only have one lunch option, and it is usually NOT GOOD. Breakfast has even gotten worse. They can’t afford decent cooks. Even our Kitchen manager is really bad. They cut the food budget and even implemented meatless meals.
I sometimes wake up early and find there is no one at the front desk at 4 or 5 am. I think this may be a violation of some rule. I know our agreement said it would be staffed 24 hours a day.
Even though I hated fire drills, I am really getting concerned about not having them anymore. We haven’t had one in over 4 months. I don’t think our new management would know what to do if we had a fire. We are suppose to have them every month
The manager, assistant manager and front desk receptionist are all abusive to us residents. They act like we are bad children, and they chase us out of the common areas that we were promised were ours to use all the time. The “receptionist” is like a pitt bull, lunging at us whenever we linger around the entry way to the front of the building. She is really a nasty person, but then again, so are her bosses. I guess that is why they like her. They treat us like inmates or mental patients.
BED BUGS! We got them, use to be on the 4th floor, now they are spreading. Managers and owners don’t seem concerned enough to spend the necessary money to get rid of them.
I don't think they do good back ground checks on caregivers or train them well. One of them talked about her past, and it shocked me. I'm more than a little worried.
They have fired all the good staff. They fired the good wait staff, caregivers, Activity Director, and even the maintenance team. Life use to be nice, relaxing and fun. We had great stuff to do all the time. Now, we have nothing but sadness. So if you come for a tour, don’t be fooled by the lies they tell you about this place. Even the little store is shut down most of the time. The good people that ran this place are gone, and nothing but incompetence remains. I know I will leave as soon as I can.

Response: OMG where did all these untrue remarks come from - sounds like a disgruntled employee. The Albuquerque Grand really is a happy place to live

Response: My Mother Resides at the Albuquerque Grand and she loves it. Best place that I was so lucky to find, I can't imagine such horrible terrible words are being said about the Grand. I am particularly surprised about the Receptionist I stop to sign in every other day and she is so nice and respectful just cant believe what these horrible words so I choose not to believe. Also I talk to the Management all the time and there are both wonderful Managers. I really have seen such a great change since the Grand changed recent Management. What a great difference.. keep up the good work.. I have great leads that want to move in but they want to live with nice people. I recommend the Albuquerque Grand to all that have a loved one that needs help.

07/20/2013  -  An OurParents User Writes:

This place is terrible! I thought it would get better after David and Lisa Walthers were fired, but I was so wrong. They cut the food budget, started restricting social and entertainment times, and have even removed some of the free religious services! I can't tell you how many times I got violently ill from the food that I ate there, or how many residents I knew who got deathly sick from it. At one point, the new nurse they had hired near the beginning of the year took away our pill crushers, pill cutters, and bagging supplies, even for residents who had orders that their medications be handled in that specific manner. The things that caregivers are forced to do are unbelievable. In my time there, I was twice left on the floor with a resident too large for me to lift on my own for upwards of forty five minutes before a manager could be bothered to answer the call. Worse, all of the med techs were at one point or another asked to count out narcotic medications to people without doctors' orders for them. This place is unsanitary, dangerously mismanaged, and offers none of what it promises. I wouldn't put someone I hate in that pit!

Response: So True. A few weeks ago, I saw a resident plop out of a dining room chair onto her "butt" on the floor. She just needed a hand to get up. One staff asked Jim the manager to help. His reply was that he was NOT GOING to help any one who falls, and that the staff should call 911. Two other male staff members came and put out a hand for her. She pulled herself up with no problem.

Response: There are numerous religious services and classes at the Grand. There has never been a report of anyone ever getting ill from the food and the care giver and nursing staff are kind, compassionate and very responsible - I work there and I eat there....this is a great environment!!!

Response: I heard you were fired for poor work and being stupid.

Response: is this Jojo you speak of? he was the WORST manager EVERRR!!!!!

07/19/2013  -  An OurParents User Writes:

Worked for this place for almost a year as a caregiver and finally had to leave because of the awful treatment to residents and employees. I would NEVER put my father or mother in a place like this with owners like Susan Tuthill and Bill Tuthill. The only good thing about the grand was the amazing care givers they had. I am proud to say I worked with such an amazing group of women! The caregivers are the only thing that keeps that place running and takes good care of the residents......... While their I was told that employees never get a raise no benifits and I will never eat the food their. The owners would come into town and never talk to anyone! When I went up to shake Susan Tuthills hand and introduce myself she said "nice to meet you" and then threw my hand down. I was shocked when this happened and went to tell the other caregivers what had happened. Wen I told them they where not surprised. They said she is very mean and never talks to anyone. They told me she is only their for the money. After working there for a year I belived it. I dont know how people like this can run a buisness like this!!! They need to go out of BUISNESS NOW!!! And NEVER be allowed to work in the health care field or with the elderly again!

Response: tell the truth you are to cheap to keep mom in a nice place you just want her money for yourself. good luck finding a cheaper place that feeds her 3 times a day every day and keeps her healthy. Selfish children want their parents to die soon and not spend any money so they can get it.

Response: So now your Management tactic is to attack the family members of residents. Boy is that good for business!

07/12/2013  -  An OurParents User Writes:

Disgusted and getting Mom out of there. According to Kay-the resident gosip (who brags about getting her info directly from Jim the manager) the owner has cut the meal budget by 50% and will be serving meatless meals 2 x's a week. Mom....We will save you.

Response: are you the one that got fired for stealing food or that went to jail ?

06/19/2013  -  An OurParents User Writes:

As a current employee with almost four years of service I would not have afamily member live here. The facilty is poorly managed, and the dining room meals leave much to be desired. The new manager is hardly ever around and when he is, is unhelpful, unpersonable, and most of the time unreachalble.
Meals in the dining room are bland, unbalanced, and half the time they are out of basic items like coffee or eggs. The high rate of tunover in dining room staff leaves residents getting poor service from less than qualifed workers.
The actual building is clean, and well decorated, but is so old that the air doesnt work in the summer and the heat doesnt work in the winter, leaving residents to depend on fans or space-heaters. Showers/baths are virtually unaccesible for people with ambulation problems or in wheelchairs.
Over the past year the health department has visited at least four times due to resident safety issues including food poisioning, and bed bugs.
If you are looking for a place for someone who is independent, this may be OK, but I would steer clear.

Response: This is an accurate review. I believe a civil suit is coming.

07/03/2013  -  An OurParents User Writes:

The managers and owners of the Grand have stopped caring about the residents. To cut costs, they have reduced meal times and restricted social areas. People were promised a certain lifestyle, and are now being treated like "inmates".

Response: STOPPED CARING! The owners never did, and the new manager was a specially selected thug with a history of roughhousing his name!

06/19/2013  -  An OurParents User Writes:

No no never never put your family member here. Horrible facility with pretentious owners. Would not put my dog in this place. Just because its cheap does not mean its a bargain. You get nothing for your money. Horrible rotten food and dirty conditions. Health department issues!! Beware.

06/12/2013  -  An OurParents User Writes:

My father was a resident for seven years and the last five years were horrible. He complained about the food constantly, heat was not turned on when it got cold and cooling was inadequate. I finally convinced him to move out, which was done in April of this year and now I am FIGHTING to get his deposit returned. The new Manager is proving to be unprofessional and not trusting. I am very upset with this facility and WOULD NOT RECOMMEND putting a loved one at the Albuq. Grand!

05/24/2013  -  An OurParents User Writes:

I really liked the Alb. Grand at the beginning, before taking my mom there, but once she moved in the stench coming from her bathroom was relentless! The workers there are good, but management is inexperienced and unresponsive! I moved my mom out as soon as I could, but over one month later I have yet to receive the money that I paid upfront.

03/31/2013  -  An OurParents User Writes:

Now that David and Lisa Walthers have been fired I think things will perk up and improve.

Response: The new GM isn't any better. I am a former employee and they still don't treat the residents with respect. Payroll is a big pain also STILL waiting for my 1st paycheck!

Response: Yeah rite the new Managets Mike and Jim refer to residents as @#$%

Response: Don't Hold your of Mothers day they still had need bugs..the food is very very bad... The new Managers Mike & Jim are a duo from hell.... I am a former employee and have seen first hand how bad the facility is... Roaches exposed wires.. Confining residents to their rooms... some residen hygiene is bad.. This looks nice but should be shut down..DO NOT TAKE YOUR FAMILY HERE

11/03/2011  -  An OurParents User Writes:

I just started as an employee at Albuquerque Grand, and I have to say that I have never seen a group of people go so far out of their way to help people and make them comfortable. Also, David and Lisa Walthers, the managers, are FORMER drug addicts. I fail to see how that matters, but I do want to point it out. I love being an employee there, and if I had seen anything even remotely questionable, I would have quit already.

10/16/2011  -  An OurParents User Writes:

DO NOT take your loved ones to this place. I'm an ex employee here and saw what really happened when you leave your elder parents here. The management is atrocious! I saw management refuse service orders to fix the heating in cold winter months. They are emotionally abusive to everyone coming in and out.
Did I mention that the manager and his wife are both drug addicts?
For some reason they are still in business.
BTW.....I gave them one star in order to submit the comment but they deserve no stars!

Response: This facility is the worst facility in Albuquerque. The owners of this establishment are The most uneducated, unprofessional, uncaring upper middle class scum.
They treat their employees like slaves and they care nothing about the well- being of the residents there. I would take my family member out of this facility ASAP. Check with the health department and verify that food poisoning and bed bugs are main complaints.
