During the time my father was a resident at the NYS Veterans Home in Montrose, he received extremely inadequate treatment. He had suffered a stroke prior. His mental status was good. He needed physical attention. On many occassions we found him still in bed during the middle of the day, dark room, soiled diaper. Constant infections due to catheter which was used sporatically to prevent changing of diaper, due to lack of staff. He was overmedicated. Upon review by family, his medications were reduced by more than half. During one visit my father acted different. He appeared weaker than normal. We addressed this with the medical staff and were told he was fine. I had him sent to a nearby hospital for observation and was told he had suffered several TIA's. The nursing assistant staff told me they noticed the change and reported it to the RN in charge. Nothing was done. Following that, we had him removed. The cost at the time was $8,000 a month. We paid timely and expected good care.

I made a visit on Veteran's Day to see a resident, and was appalled by what I saw. This resident who is limited in his ability to function on his own with a fractured hip was placed slumped in a wheelchair away from bed and helped buzzer. His false teeth one on the floor and the other on night stand. his tray that goes in front of him on the other side of room with a container of warm milk. His phone not on receiver. I tried to call and busy signal for hours. This man was cold, hungry, and in pain left alone for how long i do not know. When i pulled a buzzer to call for help, no response. left room to look for a nurse, an aide was sitting and watchin the light and did nothing. Every time i visit this wing it, Deer park, it is sad to see the neglect of a man who needs one on one care. This man is alone unless somebody speaks for him. If he was my dad i would pull him out! This place is clean but quality of care is poor....
