My experience with the staff at Amsterdam House has been extremely negative. I am an out-of-state agent for a patient in this facility. I have a difficult time getting my calls returned, my requests for a doctor to see the patient in the facility have been ignored, the staff in the financial department are rude and the department supervisor non-responsive to my phone calls to discuss the staff's behavior. A request for a change of therapist for the patient was completely ignored. The therapist would literally be yawning during the "therapy" period and not interacting with the patient at all. There is a definite shortage of staff. It sometimes takes 45 minutes to get assistance with a patient need. The staff is often times in groups chatting about personal issues while patients may be waiting for assistance. The food is tasteless and often times served late and patients left without assistance to open drinking cups or glasses for a half-hour or more while their food gets cold in front of them. I will be contacting the Hospital Administrator, the Ombudsman and, based on a recommendation from a general practitioner outside the facility, possibly an attorney. My recommendation would be to continue your research for an acceptable facility for the patient.

My father is a new resident at The Amsterdam and so far is very happy there. The staff is warm and attentive, the room is sunny and pleasant, and the food is well prepared and tasty.

Response: No real reviewer writes like that. Sounds like bs. By the way, i just read on a GOVERNMENT website that 50% of the elderly in nyc nursing homes report being abused...and you know that many elderly cannot even communicate, so that is not even accurate. The percentage would have to be higher. So, just because you dont see it, doesnt mean it doesnt happen. Food for thougt. Anyway, this facility may be nice, I havent visited it yet. I was told the best way to visit is RANDOM, unannouced visits during the week AND weekend. Peace.
