I had to do my Finnish course I was taking at the Danby house.... This was the unlivable place I've seen. They had no cleaning supplies on the cart, the bathroom had poop on the walls ,my feet stuck to the floor.the poor residents don't get changed but once a shift, one lady sat there all week with stuff draining from her nose nobody would help her. The bathhouse had no soap, towels, shampoo and was nasty! I would leave and cry. It was so bad we did not even want to sit. I also don't know why they have someone to do activities because she don't. We did their nails and the poop and dirt under them was unreal. I also live close the EMT is out there T least 6 days a week. The residents in the locked unit have it the worst very very neglected I promise don't even look at that place when u ride bye.I had a job at a retirement home at the time and still there... I'm so greatful to work were I'm at.the people that work there should be ashamed.

the residents don,t have air and the neglect their needs and i think the board of health should shut them down and find the residents a new place where they can be cared for and looked after

This place is horrible!!! If you actually care at all about your loved one then please place them somewhere else. Don't let these people fool you. If your loved one is not well enough to be able to have a voice for themselves, then this place will take advantage. Not take good care of them. Not give them the dignity and humanity that they deserve. Not try to give them the best chance to survive and have the best life possible. You are doing half of their job for them if you even want your loved one to have any sort of fair treatment! If you don't visit often then you may not figure out. If you visit everyday, then you will definitely see it. Their ratings on the NC licensing website are only because they haven't been caught. Other facilities with violations...this place is doing the exact same thing!!!! Be warned!

Don't place your family member here...there's not enough staff and the food is terrible.

This assisted living is not concerned with the needs and well being of your family member, they neglect the residents. The residents have to go to and wait at the desk for assistance and many times are ignored. It's so painful to see. They do it in front of visiting family members. The lead of the med techs Will often interrupt the resident or talk over the resident to make the process go faster. It's so very sad. Please find another facility to place your family member in.

This facility looks nice...but that's where it ends. The staff is very rude and could care less about your family member. They laugh at the residents and make fun of them...which is very hurtful. They are always shorthanded. Management changes constantly. I went in and found my mother drenched in urine several times...out was obvious she had been left for hours without being taken care of. I was very unhappy with my Mom's care and as a result moved her to another facility. I hope that you seek a better assisted living facility for your loved one and bypass this place.

Very rude caregivers, management doesn't do anything about complaints, poorly managed. I do not recommend anyone take their family member to this facility.

Unclean bathrooms, overworked staff with what appears to be a high turnover rate, and I don't think the residents are bathed half the time.

Everytime I visit my Mother, there is no toilet paper in the bathroom. I buy her own supply to stash away and always replenish it with every visit, but doesn't anyone check this? I have even found that she uses washcloths and hand towels to clean herself sometimes because she doesn't have any paper. The supply I keep for her seems to disappear too quickly, as well as the Depends I buy for her. I'm buying both every week.

My family has been at Danby for the past eight months. All staff is extremely friendly and helpful. Management has always been helpful. When I have concerns the staff and management do address them. I have noticed a huge improvement from a year ago when I first visited. Taking care of my family member is not easy and Danby House is doing a great service for my family.

My family member has been there for a long time. The new owners have really made a big difference. The facility is clean and the staff really cares about my Mom. I frequently eat with Mom and enjoy to food and atmosphere. Reading some of the other comments, I wonder if we are even talking about the same place!!! They must not come see their family member enough to see the whole picture. I would highly recommend Danby House.

Staff is excellent! Very clean facility, as they have recently remodeled and really kept the place up. We are in there everyday with our loved one and have never experienced the problems of the people before (we're on the assisted living side) - unless of course you count our grandma caught up on the Wii gaming system bowling! Food at Christmas was excellent, especially considering the amount of family members out - our compliments to the chef!
We would certainly suggest this home to anyone looking! A+.

The food is terrible at Danby House. They need to fire their cook and get someone who knows how to cook for the elderly who live there.

Response: I stop on my lunch break, to eat with my loved one, daily. I think the food is excellent. Home cooked meals.

We have experienced a lot of the same problems as mentioned in the other reviews, especially with disappearing belongings. Clothes, shoes, towels, jewelry, hairbrushes, personal things...you name it. It happens every day. Sometimes they show up, sometimes they never do. And yes, it gets expensive replacing these things. But what can be done? I think this is a common problem with any facility of this type. I have always found the staff helpful in trying to locate missing items. Right now I think the employees are stretched as far as they can go, they can't be everywhere at once. It would be great to hire more caregivers, but that doesn't seem to be an option at this time. I do think the management is trying to make some very positive changes. We realize that no place is going to be perfect all the time. There have been some bumps along the way but all in all we have been pleased with Danby House and the staff.

Ownership/mgmt changed recently but no improvement in quality. Money was spent to "pretty up the place" but quality of care not a priority. Memory care area has constant bad odor. Aides appear to be caring and polite but care is lacking. I feel it is a mgmt/training issue. Allow clothes and shoes to disappear and make no effort to find items when inquiry made multiple times. I do not believe residents get the help they deserve and I believe they have residents improperly placed in the memory care area. I want to move my loved-one out.

My father is a resident here. I have some of the same issues as the previous review. The administration seems to be poorly handled. I have no complaints against the aides, I have had good experiences with them. They seem to be caring and compassionate. We have had problems with lost dentures , hearing aides, clothing etc. The smell of urine is sometimes unbearable when you first enter the memory care unit. I feel like the aides have too many patients to handle correctly.

03/26/2011  -  An OurParents User Writes:

My mother is a resident here. I am very disappointed in the operation of this facility. Most of the employees here are very nice and seem to care about the residents. There are exceptions. My biggest complaint is with management. Patients go into each other's rooms and get in beds. Clothes are lost all the time, as well as shoes and dentures. There is no acceptance of responsibility on their end.

Response: My Grandmother has Dementia and is a resident there. Unfortunately, wandering is a part of the cognitive impairment. I hope someone understands me, if I inherit this awful disease. I pray the same for you.
