My Mother was there about 9 yrs ago. Sadly i had to remove her from that facility. While it maybe different now.
Our experience was less than quality care. Mother, always
Had a odor. (Till i brought it to the aids attention)
The LAST STRAW WAS WHEN I CAME TO VISIT.
UPON APPROACHING MOTHERS ROOM I COULD HEAR HER CRYING. SHE KEPT SAYING HER LEGS WERE ITCHING AND HURTING. I PULLED BACK THE SHEETS TO FIND THOSE WINGED ANTS.? CRAWLING ALL OVER MOTHERS LEGS. I WENT TO HER NURSE IMMEDIATELY..
WHEN I TOLD HER WHAT I FOUND (THE BUGS ON MOTHERS LEGS) THE NURSE RESPONDED, I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT. WHEN I ASKED HER TO GO LOOK FOR HERSELF. SHE GOT SNAPPY, SAYING WELL I AM NOT A EXTERMINATOR ALL I CAN DO IS TELL MAINTENANCE.
I CALLED MOMS DR. WHO PUT HER IN THE HOSPITAL TILL I FOUND A NEW NURSING HOME. AGAIN. THIS WAS A LONG TIME AGO THINGS MAY BE MUCH BETTER NOW BUT I WOULDN'T SEND HER BACK. FYI. THE BUGS WHERE COMING IN THROUGH A GAP IN THE BRICK AROUND THE a.C. UNIT. ((ODDLY ENOUGH THAT GAP WAS CEMENTED IN WITHIN 24 HRS OF ME COMING BACK FOR MOMS BELONGINGS. SADLY, I HAD TO MOVE MOM AROUND 6 TIMES TILL I FOUND ONE WHERE THE STAFF REALLY TAKES AN INTEREST IN THE PATIENTS. AND NOT JUST TRYING TO GET THROUGH THE DAY. (DOING THE LEAST AMOUNT OF WORK) *THIS IS NOT DIRECTED TOWARDS WYATT WOODS* MY ADVICE TO ANYONE LOOKING FOR A GOOD NURSING HOME- LONG TERM OR SKILLED.
FIRST.. LOOK UP ALL NURSING HOMES REVIEWS WITH OHIO MEDICAID'S NURSING HOME REVIEWS. (LOOK AT THEIR RATINGS, AND MORE IMPORTANTLY ANY BOARD OF HEALTH CITATIONS) NEXT GO VISIT THE FACILITY (UNANNOUNCED.. LOOK FOR CALL LIGHTS STAYING ON FOR A LONG TIME. PEOPLE JUST SITTING AROUND IN WHEEL CHAIRS. IS THERE ANY URINE OR FOUL ODORS.
IS THERE STAFF JUST SITTING AROUND. (OR OUTSIDE SMOKING) HOW LONG BEFORE A STAFF MEMBER GREETS YOU.. ASK THE RESIDENTS YOU COME ACROSS IF THEY ARE HAPPY WITH THAT NURSING HOME. THE RESIDENTS AND THEIR FAMILY ARE THE BEST SOURCE OF TRUE INFORMATION REGARDING THAT FACILITY.
IF YOU LIKE WHAT YOU SEE. GO BACK AGAIN DURING THE WEEKEND. THINGS MAY SEEM GREAT DURING THE NORMAL WORK DAYS. BUT WHEN THE WEEKEND COMES TOO OFTEN DO THINGS GO BAD. PEOPLE LEFT IN BED. NO SHOWERS. DIFFERENT NURSES THAT MAY OF NEVER WORKED WITH YOUR LOVED ONE BEFORE. ALOT OF PLACES USE TEMP NURSES DURING THE WEEKENDS. Finally IF YOU FIND A PLACE YOU FEEL REALLY WILL TAKE CARE OF YOUR LOVED ONE. ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS VISIT AND STAY UP ON THE QUALITY OF CARE. DO NOT BE ASHAMED TO VOICE ANY CONCERNS.. HYGIENE. THERAPY. TURNING PATIENT IN BED. ECT. NEVER EVER FEEL YOU ARE BOTHERING THE STAFF TO MUCH. YOU ARE THE ADVOCATE AND ITS THE STAFFS JOB TO PROVIDE QUALITY OF CARE. DO NOT LET THE FACILITY BECOME TO COMPLACENT WITH YOUR LOVED ONE.
IF YOU ENCOUNTER A PROBLEM THAT ISN'T BEING ADDRESSED TO YOUR STANDARDS YOU CAN ALWAYS CALL OHIO AREA ON AGING AND ASK FOR A OMBUDSMEN. (WHO WILL COME OUT TO THAT FACILITY AND DO AN INVESTIGATION AND MEDIATE FOR YOU AND YOUR LOVED ONE. I LEARNED ALL THIS THE HARD WAY..
MOTHER WAS AT ONE PLACE FOR 6 YRS. THAN THEY CHANGED OWNERS (GETTING RID OF THE GOOD DOCTORS AND NURSING STAFF)
NEXT THING I KNOW MOTHER WAS HAVING TOO MANY ACCIDENTS. - DROPPED HER OUT OF HER HOYER LIFT, PULLING OUT HER FEEDING TUBE BY TRIPPING OVER IT, BED SORES, SKIN TEARS, VERY BAD HYGIENE. AND 6 HOSPITAL ADMISSIONS IN 1 YEAR. EVEN WITH THE OHIO OMBUDSMEN MAKING TRIPS OUT TO INVESTIGATE. THINGS STILL GOT WORSE. SO I MOVED MOTHER TO A BRAND NEW PLACE. AND SO FAR THINGS ARE GREAT. .. THATS WHY I STRESS VISIT OFTEN AND ADVOCATE. I HOPE THIS HELPS SOMEONE.
AGAIN OTHER THAN MY COMMENTS ON THE BUG EXPERIENCE I MENTIONED AT WYATT WOODS. EVERYTHING ELSE IS NOT DIRECTED TOWARDS THAT FACILITY. GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR LOVED ONE.

Part two...mother finished therapy at Wyant. I was very happy with the service and treatment there. But, as these things go, she wasn't allowed to live independently anymore, and she must live in a nursing home...which is what Wyant is. If I had left her at Wyant as a long term patient, she would have had to share a room upstairs...a small, darkish room, dreary, without a view. Her fellow long term patients were for the most part, severely disabled physically and mentally. I couldn't see having my mother, an alert person, spending the rest if her life in such an environment. It's not the fault of the staff that Wyant is the old model of a nursing home, but while the care is good, the surroundings are dull and there is very little to offer the able patient. I moved mother to a more modern facility nearby where she has a private room even as a Medicade patient, and where others are alert, even tho they are in wheelchairs...people like my mother. I was told by a staff member at Wyant that they are going to convert a downstairs wing to private rooms and generally upgrade to keep up with the trend if making it more modern, but it hasn't happened yet in time for my mother. So...rehab, yes...but Wyant long term is not so great...except for the staff of course.

Response: As a nurse at Wyant Woods Care Center, I greatly appreciate your comments regarding the care the staff gives to all our residents. I have been employed by Wyant Woods for a long time, more than 15 years, and would not continue to work there if I didn't enjoy my job. Thank you for noticing and appreciating our hard work.

Response: To the original poster....Where did you end up taking your mother? I have a similar situation with my mother and would like to move her to a single occupant room that is modern and have some younger people as well

My mother entered Wyant to rehab because she has Kaiser Permanente health insurance and rehab is covered there. I read the reviews. She had been there in previous reviews and couldn't wait to get home, but they did get her back to functioning. But stay tuned...yesterday was her first day. Imagine our surprise...gone is the dated decor. Gone is any odor. The facility seemed fresh and bright. Mom has a private room...many of the rooms are now single occupancy . Every single department...dietary, laundry, maintenance, nursing, aides, therapy, even the CEO made a point if coming in and introducing themselves. THEY COULD NOT HAVE BEEN KINDER OR MORE HELPFUL AND RESPONSIVE. It was clear that their attitude was that they are there to serve and
care. I will add to this later as the days go past....mom spent the first 20 days at Concordia, a 5 star facility, and didn't have this kind of attention to her issues. Maybe Wyant is getting a bad rap unnecessarily????????
