Shepherd of the Valley, Boardman, is well-below average according to State rating level. As a former resident, I was insulted, neglected, and verbally abused by mostly the leadership, and nothing was done about my complaints, nor did Shepherd follow my requested Grievance procedures required by the State. The complaints are too many to mention here, but Shepherd does not own up to be "Good Shepherds" or "Lutheran."

Response: Shepherd's primary motivation seems to be about making money. I witnessed a group of staff/administrators grilling a woman, Susan, in a resident lounge while I was there, along with an astonished STNA, over money she owed that she needed to pay that day, or be discharged despite her need for continued care. The woman had the check to give them. This was all discussed openly, not privately or confidentially. They have billed me for a SS check that they reportedly never received in March. I left there in July, and reported numerous grievances to the State Health Dept. For the past 5 or more years, another nursing home then Shepherd were my payees, and I had no access to my SS checks. However, Shepherd persists in billing me for the $ when we know the other nursing home received it.
It is a matter of harassing me with an ulterior motive, since I cited Shepherd for numerous problems and complaints, including neglect and abuse. If you are a prospective resident or staff, don't go to Shepherd. Both the direct-service staff and residents, are more spiritually healthy than the administrators, including the corporate pastor. For instance, I was told that male residents aren't encouraged to attend group activities because they prefer to be isolated alone! There are so many examples that I can't cover the scope of the problems here.

Three years ago when another family member was in this facility I was very happy with the care. In the last three years this facility has deteriorated immensely. They are understaffed, leadership is obviously lacking. Most decisions appear to be financially based. The facility is rundown in comparison of what it was three years ago. My relatives room was dirty with no liners in their trash can and dirty tissues under the bed. We had numerous meetings with the staff in regard to the treatment plan with no follow through and little regard of our request. Their own staff publicly admit the the facility has deteriorated recently. There seems to be a lot of attention spent on profit with little on care.

Response: Shepherd of the Valley-Boardman recently completed an extensive renovation creating all-private rooms and remodeling the therapy gym If you haven't been to Shepherd in Boardman lately, you should drop in for a visit and a tour. The facility was clean--never smelled of urine or feces in rooms, hallways. Had a variety of activities that were nice for patients. Nursing staff/aides were friendly but not as attentive as needed. Found it necessary to contact ombudsman for advocacy and guidance--especially regarding therapies (or rather, LACK of appropriate therapy) and accomodations necessary for patient to request help.
