Shortly after mom was admitted as a new "resident", she ended up with a broken hip. Poor physical therapy. Other times (yes, plural), she fell out of her wheelchair and bed, once requiring a trip to the ER. Always sitting slumped over asleep in her wheelchair; her neck is now permanently crooked. Reclining wheelchair never placed in the reclined position.. Always in a dirty pamper., usually over flowing with wet pants, sometimes with urine all the way down into her shoes. Her wheelchair always smelled like urine. Her clothes always got lost. Her hospice supplies were always taken and used for other residents, especially her wipes. Other residents were wearing Mom's clothes with her name plainly visible in big black magic marker letters. I always saw other residents sleeping in awkward positions in the day rooms when they should have been placed in their beds. The RN's are overwhelmed; Constant turnover of CNAs. Hardly ever saw the same CNAs. Few CNAs remain working there for long. Many times there were temp CNAs. Special instructions on the wall for the CNAs were never followed. Her teeth were rarely cared for. I had enough and brought her home...with a UTI. With a little extra attention she can now take steps again and her neck is beginning to straighten. I'll never utilize ANY nursing home again because of this experience.

What is senior living? Both words in this phrase are essential, but the key is “Living!” Simply put, senior living is for those age 55 and older who still want to get everything they can out of life—with excellent value, excellent care, and excellent times. It means an engaged, satisfied lifestyle based upon your wants and needs. For some it means independent living, a way to live as usual but without the hassles of home ownership or maintenance. For others it means assisted living, a type of retirement community that still emphasizes your freedom and independence, but always with a ready, friendly staff to assist as needed. For those requiring more intensive help with physical needs or with Alzheimer’s or dementia, senior living means nursing care and memory care. Senior living offers comprehensive continuing care, where retirees can “age in place,” moving from one form of care to another as needed. Finally, senior living also means in-home care, where trained staff help retirees in their current home.
